The eggs I collected from my hens are filthy!

They have never done this before.

So what do I do now? I've never had to clean eggs before and don't want to ruin them. How do you clean hatching eggs?

jlgoinggreen, I have seen egg cleaner at the feed store that says it is safe to use on hatching eggs. I have never used it. I gently cleaned off some of the dirt on my last shipped eggs with just a damp papertowel. I didn't scrub them hard. I hope someone with more experience chimes in on your question.
 
I don't clean them, regardless of how dirty- I try to put a note about this in my auctions, too, so folks don't get too upset if they get filthy eggs.

I try to keep the litter clean and dry and sometimes they thwart every effort, just like yours did! It doesn't seem to make any difference in hatching, and washing them has decreased hatching successes for me, so I leave them alone.
