Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

For those that have a hard time catching up on this thread or even those that don't like all of our chit chat on here. I for one LOVE IT! It is my daily reading time, it's like reading the National Enquirer. We have some serious stuff mixed in with hilarious stuff and then you have your unbelievable stuff mixed in with babbling and makes no sense kind of stuff. And all of this is mixed in with actual talk about our hatch and eggs and chickens. It's better than any soap opera I have ever seen. I really hope that every one gets a chance to read all the posts. You may just learn something about incubating eggs, knee injuries, how to grow old gracefully, or even what to make for dinner tonight. I LOVE THIS THREAD!

Ditto!

...and how about word trivia?

Like 'homophily' which is a good word for all of us in this group for more than one reason!!

Also, I'll point out that my use of the word 'ditto' ages me... you young'ins can just take a second and value your youth today!

Okay, word trivia: xerophilous
Used in a sentence - I am looking for some chickens that are xerophilous as I myself am xerophytic and live in a xeric area. Can anyone help me out with said chickens? Anyone???

Ah, yes, my own favorite form of gardening is xeroscaping! I'm afraid the best chickens for you would be of junglefowl lineage, and would prove to be poor layers. They obtain much of their liquid in their found foods in nature.

Yes, the heat hardy types all seem to be mediterranean with long slender bodies and doesn't it just figure that I like the physical form of Sussex and Orpingtons! The exact opposite of what does well here. I am playing with the idea of doing an underground coop (open in the front to fresh air) that might keep them cooler. For now we just keep lots of damp dirt areas in the shade.

I threw out all digi thermometer's last year after they both drove me crazy and reeked havok on my hatches. This year my hatch rate is DRAMATICALLY improved. Went from about 33% success rate to 65-100% depending on the bator. I threw them all out. No wigglers. No nothing digital. Its alcohol in a tube or nothing. And your incubator will hatch you some birds but its still a cheap incubator. I got about 65% in my LG and had same eggs in my Brinsea and got 100%, what does that tell you? The LG actually hatched more eggs for me because of capacity so if you get your own eggs or use cheap eggs, a cheap bator is just fine but I wouldn't trust it with valuable eggs. Just my humble opinions.
