Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

Locked down this morning at 6. I wont be home until after 7:30pm so went with the time closest to noon.

Last night I was cutting the sponges to size for lock down and DH walks over. I've only snuck peeks a couple times at a couple eggs and haven't tossed anything. He looks at the 21 eggs in the incubator and says it will look like a popcorn maker in there when they hatch. Chicks popping & feathers flying.

I hope I get some to hatch & good luck to everyone.

Ok I did it early! You all were making me nervous with the early hatchers!

I just did a quick candle in my dark laundry room and locked down 20 eggs. Tossed 6. My broody hen has 4 under her that I am not going to candle. Let the watching and waiting begin!!!

SCG --- Hopefully your bravery has suitably intimidated said bobcat to the point that he has relocated to a different county where he won't have to live in fear of Wonder Woman!! You do know that this incident qualifies you for membership in the "True Sportsman" club right? I looked up the membership requirements to be sure and they state "in order to be a member, one must exhibit True Sportsman qualities by practicing Catch & Release in a situation that does not require it."

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I went to lockdown this morning b4 work. I have 10 of the 28 I started with (2 of those seem pretty iffy).

The Speckled Sussex and Bantam Barred Cochins are 3/12 and 2/8 respectively (each with an iffy). So, I'm kind of disappointed about that b/c that's what we were really trying for.

The Bantam EEs are 5/6, they were basically packing peanuts.

Congrats early hatchers! I have every intention of responding to all the news on this thread but by the time I hit "reply" I can't remember who said what! But I do enjoy all the news, except maybe that bobcat story!

Mahonri, maybe Lukka got that egg started just for you! I was thinking after my PM to you last night, that it is possible that someone laid and egg in the late afternoon and then sat on it until I went down in the morning. I don't always check for eggs at night. Whatever the reason, it looks like a beauty. As for the hugeness of the egg, one of my girls has laid eggs two days in a row that qualify as JUMBO. I hope the rest of your hatch goes as well. You too Laree!

I too am in the early hatcher club but these were due to hatch yesterday! My Easter Eggs are currently being climbed on by the Mille Fleur Leghorns that have hatched. So far lots of pips and three chicks! Brinsea #1 is so full of eggs I pull the chicks out when they fluff and move them to the Brinsea with my Easer hatch, where I have those eggs safely stored in an egg carton. The MFL's are small so I don't think them crawling on the eggs will do any damage, heck it might get the little buggers motivated to make an early appearance.

Okay, here's my update, though I haven't yet moved to the hatchers:

15 Paint Ameraucana project- 13 remain
6 French Black Copper Marans- All 6 remain
10 Coro Sea X Raraku- 9 remain
7 Silkies (under broody Silkie, naturally) -7 remain (who'd mess with candling that?)
6 Bantam Cochins- 2 remain
6 Partridge Chanteclers- 1 remains
6 Seramas- 2 remain
4 Blue Orps- All 4 remain
49 Isabel Orpington Project- 20 left. The majority of these were in the incubator that got turned off for 3+ days while I was in Denver.
11 d'Uccles- 4 left. Tragedy has befallen this set.

Most were lost in the first week, it appears.
5 Nikkei/Mapuche/Quetero- All 5 remain

I'm disappointed about the Isabel Project eggs. It means I won't be done hatching for a while, after all, and it will slow my project down again. Ah, well!

All of my Partridge Chante ladies are broody, too, so that breed is definitely keeping me practicing my patience. Sheesh.

I have TONS of eggs too old to sell, because I've been distracted and haven't set up auctions. I probably will be getting a cabinet this week against all good judgment.

I can only begin to imagine your surprize. Congrats!
I'm not ready for lockdown at all; I need to prepare some egg cartons and make a divider. I guess maybe I better get off here and get busy!
