Sorry your girls won't lay Mahonri. I keep hearing about people's troubles with broodies and it's starting to worry me.

I picked broody breeds because I didn't think I'd be getting an incubator let alone two of them. Now I'm wondering if I might be in for some frustrations. I did always plan to put them in separate broody accom (because my old timer friend told me I couldn't/shouldn't leave them in the main pen) so I shouldn't have them returning to the wrong nest at least.

I'm hoping my first eggs aren't to far away, I have some girl's combs and wattles starting to look pinker than others so now I'm wondering how long it takes to go from pink to nice and red and laying.

Checked the calender and they are 17wo on Sunday.

I'm getting 10-12 eggs a day, but only two BWA girls are laying and those are the eggs I'm wanting to hatch, so hopefully the other four will start soon!

ETA: no broodies yet, thank God!

I separate my broodies from the others, in this little "NellaBean brooder" ....
They work great for broodies or for brooding chicks. Nice to have around.

I build one very similar. I can leave it 2 x 6 like the bottom one, or divide it into 2 2x3's like the top one. (click pic to see larger)

Wow Kathy, did you make those brooders? Nice.

Like Mary said, when I separate the broodies from the flock they act like they've been injured. Ridiculous.

I have 14 BWA hens/pullets and when I got off of the mountain tonight (1.5 hour hike), I had one itty bitty pullet egg.
So that makes two itty bitty eggs. I'm going to let mahalo4 try and hatch them. We'll see how they does.
