Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

Now to talk about chickens LOL. I'm getting two duck eggs per day and have no boy duck. I do make $3.00 per dosen eggs, though. I'm getting Serama eggs finally, but they are sporatic and I don't know when I'll get the next one. No Quail eggs since the light bulb blew for the timer.

I set 11 Coturnix eggs last night and I'll be setting some Sumatra, Serama, Peeper's, and some of mom's Cornish/Rock eggs on Wednesday.

Oh wow, all you folks talking about planting! We're no where near that point yet, but I should be potting up some tomatoes to sell at the famers market as started plants! Other then that, the nearest to spring we're getting is waiting on the sap run!!!!! I can't wait to do syrup again this year, SO fun.

And! Normally I wait till day 10 to candle but with this set of 7 eggs I was so careful to collect them so that they were hopefully still warm. I had been having dreadful fertility and wasn't sure why but thought that might have been because the eggs were getting too cold (I know, not fertility at all). So when the days were sunny I would open the people door on the coop and the chickens would at least venture out in that small area and maybe Mr. Roo would be doin' his stuff!

So, all efforts seem to have paid off because ALL eggs show progress on day 6!!

I'm so happy. Means I don't have to replace my awesome behavior roo just yet, and I might get some more hens that look like this

Woo hoo! I am so excited... I just got a call from the person I've been TRYING to get hold of for months because I want minorcas. I fell in love with a minorca pair at the state fair last July and have been coveting that breed ever since. It turns out that the birds I fell in love with actually BELONG to the breeder I spoke with this morning, and I stand a good chance of being able to get eggs from that pair! Woo hoo! The roo from the state fair that I fell so in love with, BTW, is the stately-looking fellow in my avatar. I can't believe I actually found the breeder of THAT roo and am going to get eggs!

I've had a really, really bad last few days so it was really, really nice to get wonderful news like that this morning!

I am watching my first ever coturnix quail batch hatching right now!

The funny thing is that quail mature so fast that these babies could be grown and laying in time to hatch THEIR eggs for the Easter hatch! (They lay as early as 6 weeks old I am told!!)

what kind of baby chick is that in your profile picture

It's a day old lavender ameraucana chick. They are a dual purpose breed known for laying blue eggs. They have muffs and beards, white skin, and slate or black colored legs, never green. They are excellent foragers and do very well in free range settings. The lav color is not yet recognized by the APA/ABA. Please visit the Ameraucana Breeder's Club for more information on all the varieties of Ameraucana in both Bantam and Large Fowl.

Click my auction to see pictures of the lav adults.
