Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

Well, I have three New Hampshires and 5 Barred Rocks, all from Kathy, sitting in the bator waiting until the official hatch date of SATURDAY, April, 23, 2011!

I ended up with a total of 15 Mille Fleur leghorns out of 22 that went into lockdown for a hatch rate of 68% I had several late quitters but these little eggs went through an ordeal, being picked up on incubation Day 8 and driven 100+ miles in an incubator with a 9 volt heating pad as their heat source! I had two that were still viable last night (Day 24) but died in the shell without pipping. I also culled one of the hatchlings. It was tiny and had several loops of bowel protruding. I tried putting it back in with a q-tip but it's little bum was swollen and it wouldn't budge. He was hardly awake at all and couldn't stand. RIP baby.

So, I have 14 alive and kicking around in the little brooder in my office. It looks like an orange shag carpet from the 1960's when they sleep. Hubby rolled his eyes when he walked in on me yesterday and found me telling them how much I love them.

Men! Why is the sensitivity gene so often missing? This generalization includes Mahonri but excludes Steve.

Although, I am a little ticked off at Steve for having an early chick, he is still a kind, sensitive soul. Mahonri on the other hand has probably spent too much time in the company of Laree.

I HIGHLY recommend the HTC G2 (also known as the Desire Z) because it is fabulous for folks who drop and break things. It has a metal body that appears to be invincible, and the screen is made of Gorilla Glass. It also has a built-in GPS navigation system (like Garmin) and all sorts of stuff that is unbelievable. LOVE IT.

I want to make a joke, but since I personally know the frustration of setting nonfertile eggs over, and over, and over again....................

SIX MONTHS ! ! ! ! I have been setting those eggs for 6 months! Not one single fertile egg!

Tomorrow is the day. I am gonna do it. I am gonna try artificial insemination.

You can do it!!

I have a bantam Salmon Faverolles who always lays a squashed egg like that- unbelievably flat, as if she was squished while it was being formed. I'm not sure why it's that way, but it's every egg!

I think we are being punked!

I was thinking the same thing.

I was going to say it's very odd and that I think everyone was having a good time at the expense of some of us, but then I just came home and found not one, not two, but three, not PIPS- I found three chicks sitting there in one of the LGs. Some of the last of the mixed Isabel/Blue/Split/etc Orp pen eggs that were super-old that I couldn't toss or eat. Three lovely blues that have already been sold to BrahmaLady. I'm so happy!

It has to be that the moon hit perigee while we were incubating. I can't think of any other reason this is all so hurried!

Out of 20 eggs... 8 made it to "lockdown"..

As of 5:20 am.. first baby hatched. I now have 4 out and 4 are pipped.. Hoping the last 4 make it out ok, the other 4 are knocking them all around.

What do you mean? I can only make him cooler.

SGC--the eggs were easy to make---I actually used all the ones that broke during boiling (or little boys decorating) for the crackle-effect batch. I rolled them on the table, so they were evenly super-cracked, and soaked them overnight.

You can see my process at:

I've been trying not to look because I set my eggs at 10:00 p.m. on the 2nd and knew mine would be later than everyone elses but everyone keeps posting of pips and peeps so I just went out to the garage to check....just in case....I HAVE AN ICELANDIC CHICK IN THE BATOR!!!!!

Completely out.....I couldn't see well enough into the cabinet without opening to check for pips so it just showed up without warning!! It's a day and a half early but then that's normal for them!! 23 more to go!!

My first time incubating and my first chick is an Icelandic!!

Looking for reassurance, but just tell me straight:

2nd chick hatched. As I had said before, I set-up in the Genesis last minute. I put two shoe-box size plastic lids under the mesh to raise it up, which created a lip around the edge of the mesh, because higher up, the wall balloons out.

So, 2nd chick hatches and promptly gets its leg stuck under the mesh. He's freaking out. DH is also freaking out. He is sure the chick is getting hurt, which was possible. (He's fine now.) I put some water in through the tubing, lift the lid, and DH extricates the chick, placing him back in the bator. Humidity falls from 67% to 51% and is back up to 64% within a few minutes. When it had come back up, I slid the top over a few inches three times, letting the humidity come back in between, to slide in rolled paper towel bumpers so that this doesn't happen again.

So, did I shrink wrap my pips? How do I know when I've shrink wrapped them?

I have another pip and more rocking eggs. Whats with all the early birds????

Super annoyed that my dang phone is broken because I supposed to call and order my Dickey's incubator today. But I called and they can't hear me. I called again, and they STILL couldnt hear me. So I stopped calling because I didn't want to make them think I was a creepy stalker! Will try tomorrow when my new phone arrives. Dang DH ordered me ANOTHER freaking iphone4 What The Heck???? How many times do I have to break the dang thing for him to figure out it is not worth the money for me to have this silly phone? He says I have to have the industrial sized phone case now though. Like a kindergartener with round ended scissors I cannot be trusted.

@Debi...No one here wants to butter your butt!!!
