Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

Okie Dokie... I am NOT catching up on the last 50ish pages that I missed. My internet was out and I just got home from a birthday party. My skin feels sun-kissed and slightly burned

So, too tired to read. Someone feel free to fill me in on the high lights

My Broody hen started off with 9 eggs. She had many of her coop-mates giving her more eggs during the incubation and also I had seen her kick some out, mostly clears, prolly new nest additions but one of which I opened and it was good. So the mystery is... how on earth did she wind up with TEN yes 10 chicks?!?!?!? and how do I even count that as part of my hatch rate? geez... OK, I will only count 9 since that is how many eggs she was supposed to be getting from day one.

Ok so over to the bator all of my 6 barred rock chicks hatched and they hatched first. They were stacked so I guess its warmer up there?
So far I have 14 buff orpingtons and I still have eggs with pips. I had set 24 in the beginning if I remember correctly and I know I removed one or two during candling. Its hard to tell how many are left through all the egg shells. Still waiting on a finally tally on the Buffs but ALL Barred rock and Black Aussies have hatched. They are 100%

SO PROUD!

In the photos below you can see my broody with some of her chicks. (yesterday I thought she was only going to hatch 3... all I can say is w0w... and she's a great mother)

And here are chicks in my brooding area. Note there are more barred rocks than I hatched. I picked up some day-olds at auction today to increase the gene pool. The ones with pink on their heads are from the auction. I still have more in the incubator right now.

Here's my cutest chick entry. It is one of my Turken project eggs. It is being shy and not showing you it's naked little neck.

Well I set 26 eggs, had 7 go into lockdown (2 were questionable)..had 3 hatch and tis doubtful more will come...the last one pipped and did nothing for over 24 hours so I helped it out...a little silkie that cannot uncurl one foot's toes ...*sigh* so 2 silkies and 1 d'uccle. They have until tomorrow afternoon and then the bator gets cleaned and refilled.

How do you float test these eggs? I know about fresh eggs the floating vs lying down in cold water but what of these that are in lockdown?

PSS. I ended up with 2 broodys outside that each have 5 chicks. I didn't have them counted in the contest.
And my mallard duck hatched out 13 ducklings today. They are adorable. They weren't in the contest either.
