Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

@ChooksChick-- sorry the hawk grabbed y our precious girl. To grab her egg? Not morbid, practical. Good thing you had the incubator up and running!

ANd I'm putting a pot on the wood stove today to simmer water with cinnamon and rosemary. I make a lot of soup but still have plenty of stems to throw in the pot!

Good morning everyone! I'm up early to get a few grandson-free moments, he's 4 so days with him are busy, busy, busy. I have a feeble entry for the egg art contest that relies more on props than talent, lol. I had an itty bitty fart egg that I'd saved and thought it might go well in a martini.

GOOD MORNING ALL!!

I have chicks hatching in my (new, free) Hovabator! WOOT WOOT!!

Three are out so far...pics after swim lessons.

NotAFarm, thanks for the heads up on the contest, I had overlooked that contest. I skimmed through them because I never win anything and with this being my first hatch and my first time on a hatch-a-long, I thought I would not enter any anyway. I actually have another little device that I use all the time, can I enter two?

To those fighting coughs and colds, I hope you feel better soon, spring colds are the worst! If you wanted to try the brandy and sugar, go ahead, the alcohol should cook off during the rolling boil. Still, I think the alcohol would help and I would add back a tablespoon per dose. ONE tablespoon of any alcoholic beverage is not going to hurt an adult (and I am a non-drinker saying that!) I've taken honey, mixed with a little hot water to make it thinner, added a quarter lemon's juice, then a tablespoon of brandy and it really seemed to help. Or maybe it was just the alcohol that made me feel happier, it don't take much when you don't drink at all!

Mahonri, I think I filled out a guess (first number that came to mind, kind of thing) on the contest page the day I gave in to temptation and joined the hatch. I never did get Tuscaloosa on the map and I'm not even sure I have the participation form submitted correctly. Now that there is a Brinsea on the table, I would like to put a little thought into it. You said Nifty said one guess per member, but I was wondering if you could cancel mine now and let me really try to win that sucker! Would you check for me, please? If you needed to "de-join" me and make me start over on the forms and such, that's okay by me!

Now the questions. I lent my incubator (stryrofoam Hovabator) and eggs to my son's science class and day 21 was last Wednesday. There were no pips as of Friday, if there are no chicks on Monday would you suggest I toss the eggs, or wait a bit longer? I know that there was a spike in temp during the first week, it may have been 110. I was not there during any of the hatch, so I have no idea if things were done properly.

Next, I have 9 eggs on the counter. They are all from a hen I lost last week. I know that hatching eggs should be less than a week old but is there any chance these will hatch? Their mom was special. I would almost be willing to drop out of the hatch if I need to get them in the bator right away (when it comes home from science class.)

There is a chance they will hatch, go ahead and stick them in now if you are concerned....you can always do a staggered hatch... MUAHAHAHAHA!

To the person asking about the list of BYCers, just start a PM and start typing, the names pop up.

I'm off to go shovel the reality that fell last night and to release the girls from their coop prison afterwards. I really need to clean in there but can't do it until it's been above freezing for 2 days, otherwise the poop is just frozen to the floor and I'm out there with a hammer and chisel trying to get it up.

Candle the eggs...tap on those that you think look like they may be viable to see if you can hear peeping...otherwise, at 25 days if they haven't hatched they most likely won't. The spike in temps early on may have killed anything growing.

I'd go for it. I've hatched some eggs that were close to 2 weeks old. It can't hurt. Put them in now, by the time St. Pat's Day is here, you'll know if any are viable.
