Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Goood morning, hatchers.

It's going to be a gorgeous day here, above freezing. Hopefully the hose thaws out so I can refill the ducks Rubbermaid Pond. I managed to flip it over a few days ago to empty it and the ducks have been mournfully staring at it, empty, ever since.

I've got someone coming after work today to pick up some eggs for hatching.

Good morning all! Well I am not worried that it is warmer here today than Phoenix. This is what I got to drive home in yesterday and do all my barn chores in

Went from 60 degrees the day before to blowing winds and snow yesterday. They have a winter storm advisory out until 11 am this morning. Mahonri, please tell your DS to drive safe. The storm is slowly moving towards the south. From St. George going north might be very slick. If he could possibly wait a day, it shold be better.
ETA - DH (and in this instance "D" doesn't stand for "dear') couldn't resist telling me how nice it was yesterday in Yuma. I was ready to crawl through the phone and

We had an agreement when he left that he was NOT to discuss the weather in AZ.

How pretty! I love it when it's pretty like that but not enough to shovel! How do the horses like it?

Well it would have been pretty if the wind hadn't been whipping the snow in my eyes the whole time I was cleaning the pens and doing the water. Poor horses were not happy about it. I had left their blankets off since it was so warm the day before. I wasn't expecting blizzard like conditions yesterday afternoon. They had turned their tails to the wind so all five of them had snow balls stuck to their fur. After I let them in for their dinner (warm mash, hopefully it helped warm them up some) I put all their blankets back on. I don't think I will have to shovel much but I am pretty sure the two stalls that face towards the north will need shoveling this afternoon. I won't do that in the dark and the horses go out all day any way. I don't think we will get more snow but it is still pretty windy out there.

Mahonri, could DS wait a day to make the drive? Tomorrow is supposed to be much better.

Well that didn't work out like I planned.

It's always prettiest just looking out the window, but inside the warm house! :D

Good morning!

Well, it's what? About 10 days until we set? I should begin collecting eggs in earnest today.

Big problem. Two of the hens that I want to collect eggs from aren't loving their new rooster even though they're all the same exact breed and variety. I'm not sure who's not getting along with whom.

Boo. I looked at the emoticons and none fit what I'm feeling. Boo. It's a kind of resigned-yep-that-happens-sometimes sort of emotion with a dash of phhhht thrown in with a heavy sigh.

It's been a week and the ladies are still running from him and hiding, too, even jumping up to the highest roosts that he can't get to.

I've taken to giving them treats a couple of times a day. I give them to him so that he can call them over and offer them a treat like he's Mr. Altruism. I'm hoping he will eventually (quickly) win them over with his magnanimous charm.

Any advice? Anybody? Anybody?

Did anyone read that article a few months back about how chickens are much more prone to mating for life (or at least a long time) than most folks have given them credit for? Don't ask me to find the article. Plz. I only read it with 1/2 my brain in gear and I'm waiting for more studies before I believe it. If it's true, though, some things will probably change around here.

Ummmmm, this sounds like the perfect time for us BYCers with a few extra, fertile eggs to offer to donate 'em to Pinx, so she won't have to "BUY" any eggs!

Hmmm?

Haha! Devious minds think alike, lol. That is the first thing that came to mind when she said that "What if she doesn't buy them but someone just sends them to her?"

Yep, we have 10 days until we set chicken eggs! There are now 187 participants.....a new record but we can do better! With a full moon this week, fertility should be great for the eggs we'll be shipping and setting!
