Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Are you all ready to put some eggs into incubators!?

Put them in. Take pics. Post pics.

Be certain you have filled out the participation form.... link is found on Post #1 (read all of Post #1 first!)

If you are guessing how many chicks I'll hatch and the first three breeds out, read about it on Post#1

I'm setting 74 eggs and 10 different breeds.

When guessing the first three breeds out, remember you can put the same breed more than once...for example... Icelandic, BWAmeraucana, Icelandic

Many of you are less than 6 hours away from setting!

We will surpass the number of posts from last years hatch-a-long, long before chicks start popping!

Let the Hatch-a-long begin!!!

I will be setting 294 eggs in my Sportsman...... at noon!

And I was starting to wonder if I was going overboard. You made my day Kathy! Even if I fill both incubators, I don't come CLOSE to that number.

Mornong Mahonri, so sorry to hear that your burn woke you up. When do you get the silvadene? Oh and your number to set makes me feel better too. I am NOT stacking so I won't have to worry about reaching your number either.

I told you that you get at least 200 BYCers for this hatch-a-long!!!!!!!!!

Cutting it a little close on that bator aren't you java girl? I think if Mahonri had cut it that close he would be having a heart attack

My temp is right but my humidity is up to 60%. How do I lower this??
Have you added water? I had to remove the water to get the RH down. ANd the styrofoam types absorb water so there is residual water to dry. My LG follows the RH of the room it's in.

I have some awesome news!!!!! My Duck eggs from Zookeeper15133 are all viable and growing!!!!! I did not expect that from eggs shipped from western Pa to Western Mt. That's over 2,000 miles and through the postal system. But when I candled them tonight thats what I got 100% growing and developing. With all the horror stories I've been reading here I expected about 50% viability after that distance. Way to go Zookeeper15133, I think allot of it had to do with the care in packaging.

Now I guess the rest is up to me I hope I do not screw it up! I have never incubated duck eggs before!
Seems like the longer the shipping distance, the better the outcome. GL

Ummm...which thread could possibly be more active than this???

OK, help with the incubator...turns out my son did more damage than I thought, I found that both doors on it don't shut properly and are letting out a lot of air. I get the temps in the bator up to 95, but no more and I'm sure its the leaking...not sure how to fix it. Found a hovabator 1602 on ebay that comes with turner for $69. My hubby would kill me but he's deployed and what happens in chickie land, stays in chickie land. (he also assumes im only hatching a few from the emails i've sent) Soooo...do I lose faith in myself and go ahead and order it (be here mon) or do I continue and try to fix this bator that I worked so hard on.
IF the duct tape isn't enough, know that if you buy an incubator, AND fix the other one you will have an incubator and a hatcher, and can do staggered hatches!!!

i've lent out my bator and am now contemplating BORROWING one and rustling up some eggs tomorrow ~ in between the two hockey games and 3hour gymnastics practice we've already got going on! Do you think I can still squeeze a green beer into my day somewhere?
Thank you all for the prayers and well wishes for my daughter. We had more testing today and should know something for certain by the middle of next week.I keep trying to rustle up some Faith and recognize that this is beyond my control. We'll deal with whatever comes our way as best we can.

Oh on a side note. For all of you trying to help me succeed with a hatch...
1) incubator has held at 99.8 steady for 3 days no variation at all.
2) humidity is 27 empty will it go up with eggs in it? Will that be too low for dry hatch?
3) I could not find a water weasel, I looked at 2 walmarts, toys r us, party galaxie, dollar general and the science museum someone assured me had them. I will probably find them Easter Sunday. Instead I put water in 2 ziplocks and put a thermometer between, surprisingly this is just a shade warmer. Right at 100. Any thoughts on that?
4) air cells on shipped eggs. I was surprised to see that most looked pretty good. I had a couple that were not as perfectly round, but where they should be. Still leave the turner off?
5) yippee, ordered the brinsea spot check thermometer and it's on it's way. Won't be here by tomorrow though.
No matter what, the eggs go in tomorrow, please, please, please let it work this time!
2) humidity will fluctuate, for me, I add water when less than 20.
3) I don't use a water weasel. Monitoring the temp 3-4 times a day tells me all.

Good Luck!! It'll be fun.

wweellll............ the box was all ready made, it is a brooder box and all I had to do was put a Peace's of fome on the top. then I put 4 brooder lights, one in each corner and fan in the mittle of the box on the top. I had to wait till I had the 4th light to turn it on. the only thing I am doing now it cutting up egg cartons to turn the eggs with.
