Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Okay. Due to shipping dates, I have two groups.

Question: Should I include Thursday's eggs in my official count when I fill out the spreadsheet?

On Thursday at 6:00 pm EDT, I set:
- 15 Basque Hen eggs (EOs from Skyline) - incubator
- 6 swap eggs - broody
- 5 mutt eggs - 4 incubator, 1 broody

Today at 1:00 pm EDT, I set:
- 6 Blue Birchen Marans (Gabbard) - incubator
- 6 RC Brown Leghorns (Gabbard) - incubator
- 7 Cream Dutch Bantams (Ebay bobbinfull) - incubator

I don't know how long the bantam eggs will take, but I think I'll lock them down with the first batch to be on the safe side.

So, that's a total of 45 for me, 19 if you just count today's eggs, in the green boxes. (A pic of the eggs that went under the broody are in the inset.)

My eggs are set! I will now go fill out the form. I set 15 in my Genesis 1588. This is the new style and has a nice channel in the middle that keeps the humidity at 26%.

My old one has 6 dorking eggs that hatch on Thursday and 20 French Black Copper Marans eggs that hatch on the 29th. Mine is the right temp for the first 18 days with the plug out and the egg turner in. For hatching I need to put in the plug and change the temp setting up two clicks from 3 to 5.

Most Ingenious Chicken Design Contest WEEK ONE CONTEST
During week 1 of incubation (17 to 23 March), post a picture and brief explanation of your cool brooder / feeder / waterer / saddle / whatever that you created for your fowl. Once the contest ends they'll be put on a BYC poll for the kind folk of BYC to vote for a winner. Submissions can be seen HERE.
Prize: A copy of Gail Damerow's Chicken Health Handbook, which he/she will surely appreciate being such a witty chicken-fancier.

Please PM me the post number of your submission as well. This thread moves so fast that I might miss something!

ok i have a question i have more eggs that were suppose to be here today but will not be here to monday i do not have a third incubator and they one i went and borrowed it is broken so no incubtor to put them in when they get here is it ok for me to place them with the eggs i put in today and if so if i stop turnning them 2 days early will it hurt them will hate for the eggs from cj to go to waste.

CountryGirl911- Go ahead and put all of the eggs in when you get them and don't worry about the turning. REally, the turning is most important in the first half of the incubation, to make certain the veins are over a good portion of the membrane for excellent oxygenation. Later, it's not as important, so stopping a couple of days early is fine.

Alrighty then, the last two eggs were laid after 11:00 [pure Silver Am and Dark Cornish X Blue Am] and added. Many are not that fresh, some over 3 weeks old.

I have a bunch of old eggs, too- but didn't want them to go to waste...like being eaten or something! Sheesh! What some people will do!! (I'm looking at you, Kathy! How dare you suggest such a thing!!??)

You haven't put the eggs in yet, have you? Have him buy one of the cheap aquarium thermometers that ChooksChick recommends. You can see one on top of my eggs in the pic below and one is stuck through the vent hole in the top (the plugs are lost!) They are reliable but a little hard to read. Can someone on here with more experience PLEASE chime in and help?

Okay, Here are mine! Put in at 12:00 noon on the dot! The kid is my DS#1 mugging for the camera, I think he is as excited as I am. Well, maybe not quite!

Thank You, Mahonri! I know Countrygirl appreciates it as well!

Your son is adorable!!

I think I will have an auction for ALL the eggs I gather here for the next 3 or 4 days. Otherwise, I am just gonna eat them.

I have no words for the atrocity.

Anyone else fill in their brackets for March Madness?

I filled mine in last Monday night.... I picked DUKE to win it all.
I had a patient that said, No way, Missouri will win it all.

BOTH out in the first round.

DUH!!! Rock Chalk Jayhawk!! Go KU!!! I'm so close to the Fieldhouse I can HEAR the crowd on home game days.

I think I'm coaching myself to calm down, Mahonri! BTW - At the risk of being too personal, you may want to take a razor to the healthy skin around the burn sites, it will help with taping and may make it easier to apply meds.......

I have two cute little pullet eggs that I am clenching my teeth not to slip in with the others. Can I get some opinions on the hatch rates and health of chicks for pullet eggs? Quick!

Put those right in! I've hatched plenty, but often they aren't fertile. Can't hurt to find out, right?

ok here is an update the thermomiters that came with with the incubators read 100 but the digital and fish tank ones read 97 in each of the incubators which one should i go by

I recommend tossing the ones they come with. Really.

Found it!

BTW the thermometer in the top says 102, I'm debating on lowering it to 99.
Any input on this would be helpful- I'm going to another thread to try and track this
down but I'm close to 3 hrs behind schedule but still on track with Mountain Time if
I can figure this out.

I would lower it to 100*, but no lower. REMEMBER: A hen is 102-103*. It's okay to be a bit warm, but cooking too slowly can cause them to poop out, too. The are naturally hotter than us, so don't let the triple digits scare you. 100 is perfect.

DH won't be home for at least two weeks. It will be waaaaaaay to late for "the talk" then.

He puts up with all of my animal craziness and I put up with his golfing. It works for us.

Mine does the golf thing, too. I used to call it the other woman. Then I played on a pitch and putt course one time with him- you know, the cute little Par 3 courses? I realized golf is just a big game of pool. My short game ROCKS!! I was a mean pool shark in college. Once was enough. I'm done with golf. He can have it, though. I have birdies!

Well I did it again. Dropped a couple of eggs, but I have hens in boxes and lots of egg songs going on. I'm adding anything out there when I set.

I'm behind on everything. Not going to be able to set at noon. I've waited to long to get rid of the last hatch from the hatcher, just hoping I'd get more. I have eggs to lockdown and no room in the Sportsman while I do all of this. If I wasn't so old and falling apart, I would have been done by now.

Sheesh. You'd think you had a broken arm or something...

You waited so long for those I thought you needed a prize :)

I set my eggs at 12:17, EST. And then I added one more at 12:30, and one more at 12:40 (from my lone light Brahma, a favorite of mine, but unfortunately not a favorite of the rooster).
Getting ready: The wheaten Ameraucana eggs (second carton down), are bluer than anything I have, but quite small.

It seemed to take forever to set them up in the incubator. Total 49 eggs:

On the right, all shipped eggs:
8 Basque
10 French Marans (they're not terribly dark)
7 Wheaten/blue wheaten Ameraucana. These are small, - 7 fit in a row, so I hope they'll hatch okay.

On left, 7 shipped Basque eggs, and 17 of my own olive and Easter eggers. Those Marans eggs on the left are from last year's olive egger hatch (shipped here), so she's not a true Marans, must be an F2.
I know the photo only shows 22 eggs on the left, but the empty spot is where I added two:

The 2 on the far right are the ones I squeezed in last, a greenish one and the light Brahma.

I wish they'd hurry up and hatch!

Does anyone have experience with Brown Chinese Swan Geese? I have a rescue pair as of day before yesterday, and I'm trying to determine gender. Crappy pic:

I'll get better pics up soon, but they look too similar to call with limited experience, and they're under a year so neither has laid an egg, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything, apparently.

Anyone have any idea? I really don't want to try to vent sex antisocial geese that don't know me...
