Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

in our garden every year we have 50 foot rows and we plant 4 rows corn, 2 rows beans, 2 rows peas, 2 rows snap beans, 2 rows squash, 2 rows cucumbers, 2 rows tomatoes 2 rows bell peppers 2 rows hot beppers 2 rows okra and we do 2 rows watermellon and 2 rows pumpkin but this year we have to cut in in half due to that we fenced in half our garden space for my kids goats
You must do plenty of canning. What type of goats did your kids get?

I have another batch of eggs floating around in the US postal system since last wednesday - thinking now that I will still try to hatch them, but leave them out of my Easter hatch group as the eggs are getting pretty old by now (10 days old when mailed) and I don't know for sure if they will even come tomorrow.
That's awful, I hope the make it.

I've got leeks and tomatoes in starting cells rght now. Will put in cantaloupe and egg plant tomorrow.

You can start cantaloupe in starting cells ? I always waited until it was hot enough to direct sow.

I've been eating peas, lettuce, peppers, beets and broccoli out of the garden for the past few weeks. I'm LOVING IT!
You're a lucky man!

Gosh, I would love to be able to grow sage and thyme ! I have a hard time with herbs. Most other things I can manage, so I just buy the fresh herbs. What are the tricks to growing herbs??

Thyme really sensitive to weeds for some reason and it doesn't do too well with other plants either. It best to keep it to itself and keep the weeds far far away. Sage is a little more hardy, but I had problems with it last year since the best spot in the yard is also one of our cats' favorite places to sleep. Then, just when I had it coming back and doing good, my mom decides to pull the weeds in the flower bed and pulls up my sage while she's at it. So I really haven't had much luck with anything but what NOT to do.

Dang! I thought I had my thermostat set on the 1588 and now I can't get it above 98.

I'll be tinkering with it until I get it right... if I don't there goes 46 eggs down the drain....

You are not allowed to panic till it's been left alone for 2 hours.

HOLY COW you guys have been a chatty bunch today!!! I have everything set except for my swap eggs from Chookschick... Guess I'll be having a staggered hatch afterall... They'll be here Monday... so I have about 10 dozen in so far... debating how many more to add with the ones from Renee...

I've got to at least add the icelandics laid by then right??? LOL

First of all, 10 dozen? I think I'm having incubator envy.
Second of all, you're not actually asking IF you should set the Icelandics are you?

OK, I've read the sheet at least 50 times on how to raise and lower the temp in a 1588

This morning it was running perfect at 99.5

I've reset it to the factory setting at least 10 times.

I've tried to up the temp 1 degree at a time.

I even tried to up the temp by 5 degrees.

I can't get it to go above 97 degrees now.

So... I guess I set 28 eggs instead of 74

I turned off the 4 toggle and turned on the 7 and then the 8. Like I did when I called GQF yesterday and the temp was fine. Now it does not change

Does anyone on here know how to make it work? Any suggestions at all?

There's no giving up. You need to be patient and wait between adjustments.

You said, "Any suggestion at all" so here goes. I would turn them all off, unplug it and wait 5 minutes, then plug it back in and flip the toggle that it was on the last time it was correct. Then give it plenty of time (24 hours +) to let everything stabilize before you make any more adjustments. But what do I know........
Listen to Wisher!

I thought I quoted Ron too. And I'm pretty sure he was pointing out that you had to turn it off before you adjust it and then leave it alone for 24 hours before you worry about any further adjustment.

Well, another 20 minutes have passed AND.... the Spot Check is saying 100.1, I'm thinking that's a miracle.

I'll continue monitoring and if it goes over 100.5, I may go back and do the 2,4,6,8 thing and then put it on "7" again... and pray.

There ya go........ messin' around already.
Do as the instructions say, and reset it to the original factory setting. And then, leave it alone for 24 hours.

Anyway, that's what I would do.

Glad to see the temps are where they need to be.

My LG was holding until I added the eggs. . . . now it is running low. Tweaked it a bit, now wait 24 hrs. Must sit on hands and be patient and wait. Wait, Wait.

Yes! 97 for 24 hours will not kill them. It can take longer than 24 hours for the eggs to warm up when you first set them, especially with a full bator. Once you get all of them up to temp they well stay there longer. It's kind of like driving a truck with a full load

Mahonri Replace the thermostat heater part after the hatch. These are different from the wafer ones in the non digital versions.

Michelle, I have a cabinet incubator I built last Spring out of a mini office fridge.. It has 4 trays and holds 120 chicken eggs (without putting any eggs where there aren't cups LOL) I think I have 21 one icelandics already in there but since I have to add the eggs from Renee (hopefully tomorrow) I'm thinking I better add at least all the Icelandics laid Sat, Sun & Mon as well... so I guess I'll be stacking... Just a side note.. I've learned that the icelandic eggs work great along the edges of my trays since they are smaller than the other eggs.. After I candle, I'll move stuff around... Hopefully we'll have a good hatch.. This is my first hatch this year... I'll post the final count of eggs and pictures after I get the ones in from Renee...

You were talking about building a bator Michelle.. I say go for it.... I used Flexwatt tape and a lightbulb.. most important thing though.. I have a digital thermostat.. it has a 0.3 degrees celsius window so I set it for 37.4 degrees... It turns on at 37.4 and off at 37.7.. set it and forget it!! One thing I don't have to worry about.... I use a water weasel with the thermostat probe inside. I want to build another bigger one this year but haven't had the time.. I'm still working on finishing the inside of the barn.. If you are interested, let me know and I'll send you the info on my thermostat.. You can get them on eBay.

I think something is terribly wrong. I put eggs into lockdown and temps and humidity are perfect. Makes me really uneasy. It's like a tease.
