Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I did read the cheat sheet, but evidently the info didn't stick to the inside of my stupid head. Thanks, I've been sitting steady at 20% all along. Temps have been nice and steady too. It's my first time but so far so good. More looking than anything else to do. Thanks for the info!

Hi all! Quick question. The incubator is on my dresser like 10ft away from my window. Would it be okay to open my window? It's like 40-50s. Not quite sure. It's just sooooo hot in here with the incubator. I have the same problem with heat lamps. :/ thanks!!

I sat 17 eggs... chicken eggs, anyways.

I noticed you all have issues with keeping your bator closed, but my problem is...

I KEEEEEEP ADDING IN MORE EGGS!!! I have to chant, "DON'T PUT IN ANYMORE, DON'T PUT IN ANYMORE, STOOOOOOOOOP PUTTTTING MORE EGGGS INNN!!! YOU ALREADY HAVE WWAAAAAAAAY TOOO MANY!!!!"

Yeeeeah, I hatch too many, and can't get rid of 'em. I hatched like, 125 button quail since like feb 29th or so. I've sold... like 20. Tops. Is 1 an 2 dollars too much?

Hey, does anyone know why my eggs would die between days 12-16? And right before hatching? If I get them past the 16th day, they're generally fine.

And I usually only loose quail eggs before hatch day. It isn't my incubator either, because it wrks great and my quail hatch rates increase by 10% every hatch. Last time was 60%!

Can you enter an incubator/hatcher design in the 'ingenious inventions' contest?
You can read thru these sources for solutions as to death at 12-16 days:

Another hatching trouble shooter in a different setup that might be easier to use for some people. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/aa204

Do you use craig list to sell off the quail?

LOL! I'll take that award! It's all I seem to be up for!

I meant to ask ya'll yesterday... I have one of those perfect oval eggs in my hatch and was not sure which end was the pointed end. I know what the air cell looks like once it becomes obvious, clear looking area in the end of the egg, but I didn't see that in any of the fresh eggs I looked at. I candled the oval one and one end has a small lighter area without defined edges and the other end had a slightly darker, perfect circle with defined edges. Which is the air cell? I would guess the lighter end but what is the other thing? It was off center, so it is not variation in the shell thickness. Any ideas?

I heard when in doubt which end was up, let the egg inubate a few days on its side. After a few days, you should be able to candle and determine which end is up because the air sac will start to grow.

thanks!!

It will change the environment of the incubator, IMO, don't open the window. THe economy incubators fuction better in a stable environment. Sorry.

My LG has manufacturing instructions to keep it in the 70 degree range.

Okay, I've got the first broody of the year BUT...........she is also one of my egg eaters. I had to change to roll-away nest boxes so she couldn't get to them. Do you trust a broody with eggs when she may just eat them? Anyone with experience with this? She's very broody - she is brooding on nothing because the eggs roll away from her.
