Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

What are the colored cups for??

I was going to try the "dry" hatch, but after I got all the eggs in and everything leveled off, the humidity dropped to 10%, which I decided was too low. We have a wood stove burning 24/7, so our home is pretty dry in the winter. Anyway, the bottom trays are such a pain to get to with the turner (I either miss or overfill

) , and since I wasn't using all of the turner cups anyway, I decided to use the bottom half of plastic Easter eggs. I only put water in 3, and the humidity jumped to 43%, so when I fill them the next time, I'm only going to use 1 or 2.

Actually it is a wonderful thing. You don't have to go down to the DMV every 3 - 5 years. You also don't have to bring all the "pedigree" papers that are required here in Utah. First time I went to go get mine here it was social security card, birth certificate, proof of Utah residence (like a utility bill with your address) and your out of state license. In a few years when I have to renew it, I will have to bring it all again except the out of state license. Of course they were only open Monday through Thursday at the time as well. I think that has changed though. Geez

NO WAY!! When I got my Utah driver's license all they wanted was my California license and had to take their open book test. That was a while ago. But the California license I all ready had, had required the proof of being a legal citizen.
glad you liked my crazy horse story... they usually don't get out.

Double post editing to say that I did not have the turner on in set up

I use an LG and a homemade, but don't use a turner. I have read load on the LG threads, the turners has a motor that generates heat and adds to the incubator. That may be contributing to the increasing temperature. Can you turn down the temp a HAIR?

Double check which way to turn the knob--many times I have mistakenly turned it the WRONG direction. Look at the arrows and the words carefully.

Also,

I have read, but again, no experience, that the motor can add 4-5 degrees. That could be detrimental if true. Can you monitor the temp for a few hours to see if it keeps climbing despite turning the knob?

I need to get some sleep but going to check again in 2 hours. I have two thermometers in there and they were reading the same before but now the side with turner is 101.2 and other side is 100 even

Well, I'm caught up for the night and I'm now off to bed. I'm surprised at all the temp problems everyone is having. Can't remember which Hovabator I have, but I haven't adjusted it since the first hatch I did last year after I got it.

I've had some really good hatches in it too. Last hatch (hatched last week) I got 9 out of 10 to hatch and the one before that was 7 out of 12, but one of my cats kept sleeping on top of the bator and raising the temps.

Actually, I think part of the reason behind my good temps is because 1. I tape up the holes on the bottom on 2 sides since my room is so drafty. and 2. My room is so humid I don't have to add water for the first 18 days. (this is year round by the way. My house is well over 100 years old and falling apart around us.)
