catching up on this thread is hard work. i finally finished the 300+ posts that had accumulated sometime this weekend. and i still have 130 pages to read from when i was gone last week. i went and bought a netbook to carry around the house so i could catch up on byc business, LOL
i finally took the heat lamp away from my valentines hatch chicks. they're 5 weeks and fully feathered, plus its been warm here in AZ and they've been sleeping on top of the box instead of inside it. but today it has been rainy and cold, they dont seem to be complaining, they are all in the box again, with no lamp... i wonder if they will get a chill. should i worry about them? there are 17, i'm trying to convince myself they can generate enough heat on their own... ??
I never toss until day 10 or the eggs weep now weeping eggs are not a good thing though common with shipped eggs...looks like amber drops stuck on your egg I get rid of those ASAP and sniff if it doesn't smell good you need to find the bad egg . Since I do many dark eggs I've been known to leave them until lock down once I tossed perfectly fine eggs on day 10 because I didn't see anythingI thought.![]()

Last year I incubated a lot of pheasant eggs, and they were so dense, I really couldn't candle. I never took one out, and never had one explode. Maybe beginners luck.I am an amateur candler and not very good at it, and have read several times where people thought an egg wasn't doing anything and tossed it, only to realize (too late) that it had a growing/live chick in it. So my rule is "Unless I am 100% positive / or it is weeping or STINKS", I'm leaving it in. I may change my rule the first time I have an egg explode! LOL The more experienced hatchers may disagree with my philosophy, but I would feel horrible if I tossed a live egg.![]()
That reminds me. in the early pages you posted a pic you took of a lighthouse and I was going to ask if you would mind sharing that picture. It was so pretty I wanted to frame it and hang it in my house.
I took my ecoglow away from my valentine's hatch chicks yesterday as well. I'm in upstate NY, so I bet yours will be fine.![]()
