Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Also be careful of the built in hygrometer. I have two calibrated hygrometers and they show that the Genesis built in one reads up to 20 points lower than what it really is. The lower the humidity the closer they read but when it rises then there is a big difference. As is it will read 50 when it is really 70. Make sure you check it

To those with the new Genesis 1588, the one with the digital display on the top and the new water tanks and channels in the bottom.

Be careful if you are following the cheat sheet for hatching. Do not fill all of the channels with paper towels @ lockdown. Mine could not compensate for the extra humidity and water. It stayed stuck at 97 degrees, so i think it messes up the thermostat. There was condensation over the display, so I had to look at it from and angle to see the numbers.

I took took the water tray out and put paper towels in the middle channels only. This made a square around the three tanks in the middle. Humidity went to 70 this way and the heater was able to get the temp up to 99.3, so I moved my 6 SG Dorking eggs in. It all stayed stable over night so all should be well.

Can you believe we have 90 more participants than last year?????

I have filled it out twice. The first time when I didn't know how many eggs I was going to set (Feb) and then on the 17th. Who do I need to PM to see if they will change number of eggs set to include the 6 eggs I tossed in in the 18th

Cliff notes version for those who can't keep up. This is only up to today.
Waiting and chatter
Waiting and chatter
Waiting, some boo boo's and chatter
Eggs being sent all over the place
Panic by those waiting for eggs
Set day, more panic by people waiting for eggs, panic by people CHECKING TEMPS WAYYYYYY TOO SOON (ahem, to Mahonri)
Contests starting to kick off
More panic by people about temps and humidity
PM's to Laree to fix mistakes
Back to waiting and chatter

Thanks - I needed the overview.

You're there. You just have so many breeds listed, it is hard to get to the bottom, which shows your name, number set, etc. If you do a copy and paste into Excel, you can see the whole row.

Mahonri, you know you miss seeing this. I took this picture from my big front window this morning. Snow covered mountains..beautiful!

Ok so here are the pics the kids took when it happened the Hawk is very much alive as he was when I snatched his *** up off the ground! I am the one holding him and I frankly look like hellooo but had been doing farm chores all day, I am angry and half strangled with grief ...(I know some people don't get that, over a chicken, but the one I will post at the end is my Little Splenda chirping happily on my leg the day the HAwk went in her coop and tried to KILL her and she was smart enough thank God to hide under the little gang plank that goes outside she was frozen in fear...did I mention she is back in the dang house?
Update on Princess....she is rattling when she breaths....so I gave her a shot of Tylan 50 and a syringe og my concoction for sick birds nutra drench, baby parrot food,a bit of sugar. Vit E, polyvisol will be alternated to help her feel better I also go in and give her nice clean water thru a syringe so I know she is drinking...she can't stand but she will protest a bit and is sore...but the tried to flap her wings when I set her down earlier....she wont eat on her own at all but "looks" at it like she is thinking about it a little....so we will see. She is still alive. The incisions look good and the drain holes aren't oozing or anything. and there is no heat....wonder if I should should get some penicillin or something? I HAVE some for horses.....mmmmm
Here is the hateful Beast.

That is the coop behind me, that is the front of the coop where the layers are, not a chicken in sight! If you go around the back of that coop is the right side coop which is inside the door you can see and to the right. the pop door for that yard and coop is in the back low to the ground...where he went in.mind you this hawk flew into the pop door, inside the coop! where horses and people all over coming and going...I have read about predators we "TALK ABOUT PREDATOR PROOFING"all the time!!!! WE have the coop on a concrete slab so nothing can dig!!! NEVER THOUGHT THE HAWK WOULD GO INTO THE COOP through a pop door I am still just stunned...

My sweet Splenda..we don't even know what she is!!

Oh I'm soooo sorry! I can't believe how traumatic that was. I had a beautiful white silkie roo and a really dumb partridge silkie that were inseperable. One day I went out and there was blood splatterd on the coop and white fluff in the garden. Whatever got my roo didn't leave any pieces but blood and fluff..and I think thats much better than finding the whole or injured. I was sooo upset that day. I can't imagine how you feel. And I think you're pretty BAD-***! I can't believe you just grabbed the hawk like that! That takes guts. You should show us the pic!!! I hope you're little princess gets better fast!

what happened to the hawk i hope they killed it

You are lucky he didn't bite the c*** out of you. He still could have taken out chunks of flesh with the way you were holding him barehanded.

I hope the rest of your birds are okay.

Such a shame, I know he's a predator, but he has to make a living somehow. It's too bad our birds can make an easy meal. I'm fortunate in that I'm able to have solid roofs over my runs (flippin expensive). I see large hawks circling all the time, they nest on the neighbor's property. We can watch the fledglings with binoculars. I only free range my birds if I'm sitting there watching them. I know it's not practical for most people.

Sorry for the loss of your birds.

Deb

I'm sure they didn't, they are protected. It is unfortunate when our flocks get on the menu. I always hold my breath when the hawks fly over, and I'm sure I've lost some, just never had to see it happen! I did witness a close call one day, but the targeted Iowa Blue/Ameraucana hen won the fight without a scratch.

Chick-among-us, you are superwoman holding that bird! I admire your restraint in not hurting it. Even knowing I shouldn't, I would have been tempted to SSS.
