Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Hi everyone i would like to take this time to appoligize for the typings i have done with the all caps when i am at work i can type normal like i am now but at home i only have my laptop and the caps lock is broken and i can not afford to get it fixed and my father in law who always fixes my computers will not be home for several months i will not let hubby touch the laptop he would make it worse lol. My father in law works with computers and fixes them in the air force so thats why i trust him to do it. Again sorry for all the caps when i type from home i will try and see if i can attach a keyboard to it and seeif that works until my father in law gets home

Mine's in there twice too (2/19 as buckabucka with 24 eggs, and on 3/17 as "bucks bucks" with 49 eggs, thanks to my jumpy IPad).
I did pm Laree, but I think she has thousands of PMs to go through, and she just lost a friend. So sorry for your loss, Laree.

Mine too. I didn't see my name on the list so i resubmitted it. Then I looked at the results link and i'm 101 and 202 or something. Sorry!

Ok so here are the pics the kids took when it happened the Hawk is very much alive as he was when I snatched his *** up off the ground! I am the one holding him and I frankly look like hellooo but had been doing farm chores all day, I am angry and half strangled with grief ...(I know some people don't get that, over a chicken, but the one I will post at the end is my Little Splenda chirping happily on my leg the day the HAwk went in her coop and tried to KILL her and she was smart enough thank God to hide under the little gang plank that goes outside she was frozen in fear...did I mention she is back in the dang house?
Update on Princess....she is rattling when she breaths....so I gave her a shot of Tylan 50 and a syringe og my concoction for sick birds nutra drench, baby parrot food,a bit of sugar. Vit E, polyvisol will be alternated to help her feel better I also go in and give her nice clean water thru a syringe so I know she is drinking...she can't stand but she will protest a bit and is sore...but the tried to flap her wings when I set her down earlier....she wont eat on her own at all but "looks" at it like she is thinking about it a little....so we will see. She is still alive. The incisions look good and the drain holes aren't oozing or anything. and there is no heat....wonder if I should should get some penicillin or something? I HAVE some for horses.....mmmmm
Here is the hateful Beast.
trying to explain size to Authorities.
.
HE was trying to fly upside down

I was trying not to cry

That is the coop behind me, that is the front of the coop where the layers are, not a chicken in sight! If you go around the back of that coop is the right side coop which is inside the door you can see and to the right. the pop door for that yard and coop is in the back low to the ground...where he went in.mind you this hawk flew into the pop door, inside the coop! where horses and people all over coming and going...I have read about predators we "TALK ABOUT PREDATOR PROOFING"all the time!!!! WE have the coop on a concrete slab so nothing can dig!!! NEVER THOUGHT THE HAWK WOULD GO INTO THE COOP through a pop door I am still just stunned...

My sweet Splenda..we don't even know what she is!!
So Sorry for what happened to you and your chickens, Splenda is a Beautiful little D'Uccle. That hawk is huge and had to have been a brave MF'r. To Just kill and not eat is beyond me i have only known of hawks to kill and then eat their prey, not slaughter everything in sight, So Sorry! You are a very stong person to have not given in and just killed the beast.

I'm sorry for your losses. That hawk must of been desperate for food. We have tons of hawks here, but my only loss over the last 3 years was a pullet to a tiny juvenile hawk/falcon. That little hawk was smaller than my pullet, but managed to pin her against a fence when I was gone to town. Good for you not to kill out of anger, hopefully with the rough handling "your" hawk never comes back.

CHick among us, Sorry for your loss.YOu are and were understandable upset. You are very brave to hold that hawk. My DH has stories about holding eagles. THe claws are the most dangerous!! You have a solid grip for sure!! RIP brave rooster. My DH worked for years on eagle projects to bring back the population. We do what we can to minimize our livestock losses to the wildlife; we try deterents as much as possible and as much as we enjoy our chickens we also enjoy the wildlife.

I would like to ask for some input . I have been selling eggs at the end of my drive, clean, and in new cartons per Mass law. I put up big signs to draw in commuters, and was barely keeping up with customer demand. THEN a neighbor put up a small cardboard sign. Her price undercuts mine by a lot. My sales have dropped. Several times no money has been left, or half the money has been left. Maybe 2/3 of the time the correct money has been left. I Keep the eggs in a clean cooler with an ice pack; a computer generated sign informing the price and the nice free ranging life.

My driveway is 1000 feet of gravel.

If you were a customer would you drive all the way up?
Would you be upset if the eggs were no longer available?
Does the stand need to be monitored like a lemonade stand?
Should I just drop my price?
Should I buy out her eggs and eat them myself? JK
Help me think this thru.

Mahonri well la di dah for Feeniks - It's 84degrees is beautiful downtown Willer Sprigs (S.W. of Shecago. We're been setting records right and left of strings of 70's and 80's the last couple of weeks. Average temps for this part of March are highs in the 40's.

Arielle, I'm not too sure what your problem is. Are you saying people are taking your eggs but not paying for them? "Cause I'm wondering if the neighbor with the small sign, is "borrowing"your eggs and uncutting you by selling them.
