Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Arielle, I'm not too sure what your problem is. Are you saying people are taking your eggs but not paying for them? "Cause I'm wondering if the neighbor with the small sign, is "borrowing"your eggs and uncutting you by selling them.
To clarify.
Egg cartons are gone and no money in the money box, or half the posted rate.

Didn't think of that! I try to think nice thoughts about people. Because most people are decent.

Hi everyone my husband just called me from home and said the temp spiked to 102 not sure how long it was at that temp when we left this morning for work it was at 100 did the eggs just get ruined

Believe it or not I had a spike of 110 (the eggs read 106) the hatch before last and 8 of the chicks survived!!! I was set to throw them all away but it was early on when the spike hit so I figured I'd let them run a few more days just to see, even though I was sure they were all dead. I candled on day 11 and kept 12 of them. 10 were definitely developing!!! I couldn't tell about the other 2. The power had gone out while I was at the doctor's office and my stupid thermostat (which has never been right) reset itself once the battery backup went out.

The really good news is, I was sooo upset about it, when it happened, that my Hubby felt terrible for me and we decided to get the new automated Brinsea Ova Easy that I have been drooling over for 3 years. That thing is like a dream come true! It goes up to 99.5 then down to 99.4. Up to 99.5 then down to 99.4. I swear!!! I've not had to adjust it once! *she says while grinning ear to ear like a madwoman*

What's even funnier is the old bator has not had a glitch one since then. Which is good because I had just gotten another 40 eggs and they had to be set in the old bator because the new bator wasn't due to arrive until 2 days before we all set eggs for this hatch.

Anyway... my point is I have to laugh (with you not at you) when I see folks getting upset over temps that fluctuate a couple of degrees. I know it's been pointed out over and over again on here that a couple degrees isn't a serious problem. Especially when it's early on. Seriously, it's so sweet that y'all care so much about the babies but BREATHE people breathe! It'll be OK and giving yourself an aneurysm isn't going to help anything even if a disaster does strike.

Honestly if he had been HUNGRY and killed one of my birds and was trying to take his "food" away I would have released him myself...that was not the case.. He was killing defenseless pets needlessly with no thought to EAT it.... he killed (essentially) the maran and moved on to pinkachu killed him and left him lay...didn't try to carry anything away and was maiming and killing without feeding at all. What was the point of this? And as to him harming me....I'm not such a great example to my children after all, as I was so consummed with anger I didn't care at all what the bird was capable of....I wasnt scared at all...I was ANGRY I think I scared him. Had he hurt me,well I might just be in jail I guess. But I was careless in my anger, I had no concern for my own safety whatsoever.....and I certainly didnt care if he was a bit uncomfortable....especially after we lined up the little bodies to bury...heartbreaking.
A shame as we are such bird lovers and even though the hawks frequent our pasture they have never before attacked the birds....we are so careful about predators...and I dont free range them unless we are outside with them.... I am all about nature and conservation, but I think protecting my animals is my duty, looking at princess so listless...I think I didnt do a great job

I hope the rest are ok since there was another maran girl had blood all over herself and now I can tell which one she is and they all seem fine....just worried I won't know until I go out and she's dead

You are lucky he didn't bite the c*** out of you. He still could have taken out chunks of flesh with the way you were holding him barehanded.

I hope the rest of your birds are okay.

Such a shame, I know he's a predator, but he has to make a living somehow. It's too bad our birds can make an easy meal. I'm fortunate in that I'm able to have solid roofs over my runs (flippin expensive). I see large hawks circling all the time, they nest on the neighbor's property. We can watch the fledglings with binoculars. I only free range my birds if I'm sitting there watching them. I know it's not practical for most people.

Sorry for the loss of your birds.

REally??? a D'uccle? I thought she might have some.does she look pure to you? we didnt know and she is SUPER little...

ANd ME too about the hawks normally killing for food! AND AND to fly into a pop door (trap like) like that and just start killing instead of killing one and then feeding...I swear I could have handled THAT....hard BUT nature I coulda stood it you know? NOT this killing spree...he was trying to go on!! Thank GOD I interupted him... SEE that tree near me? looks like a head bashing tree doesnt it? I surely thought if it don't think I didn't,I am no saint.

Welcome Sphinx! That would be tough for me too. I've hatched eggs for my classes before and let some of the kids take the bator home for the weekend (with parental pickup and a signed sheet saying they understand what needs to be done). That was very hard but at least I had them with me most of the time. Good luck!!!

Most people are. It just takes a few though. I agree with Jessshan8. You can try to go talk to them and hope they are reasonable. Point out that Farmer's markets don't let folks charge different prices because then it just becomes a price war and nobody is making a profit anymore. They are all required to charge the same rate. Well at least at any one particular farmer's market.

As far as some folks not leaving the correct amount of money, well I think you may have to get a camera or just make folks drive up the driveway and pick them up from you. Yes you may not sell as many but with your neighbor undercutting you and folks not being honest it doesn't seem like you have much of a choice. You could leave your number on the sign as well to make it easier for folks to make sure they aren't driving up for nothing.

Hopefully your neighbor will be reasonable and see that the small amount they are charging is not really helping them make a profit either.

Chick-among-us....as horrible as that all is...that picture of you holding it, barehanded and ******...is soooo awesome. Someday you'll look back and you're going to laugh and be impressed with yourself. I bet the authorities were a little scared of you. No one wants to mess with a ****** off chicken lover who's babies were slaughtered....especially when she's ****** enough to catch the hawk barehanded and hold like a really naughty roo!!!

I'm glad princess is ok and hope she gets better!!!

You are one brave lady all right. Something my hubby thought of too...not sure if it is time for that breed, but I know the bald eagles are close to hatching..so maybe this bird wasn't killing just to kill, but was going to take breakfast, lunch, and dinner to her babies at your expense! So sorry again.
