Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

It is very frustrating when our whole American culture has been fed BS. I talked with my mother who was a big dieter in the 70's and she said weight watchers was 100% antifat, not fats allowed. Atkins wrote in one of his earlier books, that he saw many patients with skin problems because of that. Denmark is currently on the Atkins diet craze. ANd eating tons of butter, etc. THe PBS program still didn't buck up against the Medical establishment, and is maintaining a low fat statis.

Can someone please explain why the Inuets ( sorry about spelling) were not fat people while eating whale, fish and seal UNTIL modern food was introduced?? DAAAA . . .

WHen I was pregnant the first time, my OB/GYN sent me to the nutritionist at the hospital, I came home ranting, "She wants me to eat crackers and peanut butter for snacks and eat 300 carbs a day!!!! " My DH supported what I wanted to do for food. Lots of vegies, whole fruit, lamb, steak, salads, and Ben and Jerry's ice cream now and then.

A couple years ago I scoured used book stores for other dieting books, and found a number of low carb diets. All written by MD's. I like Atkins because he includes all the studies, hundreds of studies, to validate the information. THough the others also have interesting points, or a different explanation which helps me understand the biochemistry.

No doctor has told me, but I have figured out that I am teetering on the brink of Diabetes II. If I eat a high load of carbs, I fall asleep. CLUE!!

I did a lot of baking of cookies cakes and breads to feed my carb adiction; I do not make bread any more except for holidays. ANd I think I have my kids down to making cookies and such only once a week. Of course, if I get a craving, I make a batch and eat it! Arghhh . . . .a work in progress.

Hubby is a diabetic. We've found really good success just eating as naturally as possible, avoiding prepared/processed foods, and we try to be locavores. I'm a natural food broker, so it's nice to have good raw foods and whatnot around, but it's important to try not to eat much that's been processed even then. Big thing to know: if your beef has been grass fed its whole life, it's really low in bad fats and cholesterol and high in important fatty acids. It's the corn-fed stuff that's not so hot.

Stopitstopitstopit!!!!

I really REALLY must get a pair of emus someday!!!!!!! Its not even something that can be negotiated. This just must happen. HOPEFULLY, if all continues as we plan on our merry journey we will be buying the house we are in in 3 yrs. And said house comes with 8 acres......Granted, right now those 8 acres are wooded, but since I have 3 years I think I have time to clear some of that for a pair of emus! And probably some other stuff too!!!!!!!

My husband is not on board with this plan. He says no way will we have emus, he doesnt want to be "those" neighbors.

I say 2 things: 1- we already are "those" neighbors andd 2- Its really cute when you try and put your foot down!

yeah i have a broody that looks like she may stay unlike my first broody my question is the next boxes are made of plastic milk crates with the open end up and about 1 foot off the ground my question is when she hatches the babies how will they get out without getting hurt since there is no ramp or stars to get up or down do i need to move it to the ground but the thing is it is muddy from the rain and storms that do not seem to want to end long enough for us to clean out and let it dry

Ohhhhhhh! *meltdown*

I took the emus outside today to enjoy the beautiful weather. They are 16 days old today.

They looked hot, so Tyler (my son) handed me a dish of water for them.
They tried to get IN the water!

And then......... they pouted because they couldn't fit.

There was an old pan outside, so I filled it with water from the hose, as they watched.
Wilma thanked me with a big smile, "Awww, yes, that's the ticket!"

Fred tasted it.

l

Wilma, then, jumped right in and stayed a while.....

Wilma is a character, and obviously the most forward of the two.

Raz, I have some silkies set to hatch next week. I am sure (assuming they hatch) that I may can part with a few chicks for you.

That would be awesome! Of course, it's pretty easy to hide them since the brooder stays in my room. Mom wants nothing to do with the chickens and it helps me keep a closer eye on them.

Wanted to also mention if you've entered a contest this week don't forget to PM your entry to the contest host.

Thanks!

SCG thebirdguy didn't say we had to PM him the pictures for the cutest baby contest. Do we have to send the pics or can we just send him the post #'s?

Well I think I might be out of the hatch a long. I had 48 eggs plus another 24 in two incubators, 24 of were due to go into lockdown on the 28th, unfortunately today we lost our power for 5 hours. The temps inside the bators got down to 75 even though I had them wrapped in 2 blankets. I had to wait for a friend to get home from work who has a couple of Sportsmans with extra room and took them over there and put them in. What do you suppose the chances of them hatching are, I am heartbroken over this. We are experiencing 45-50 mile a hour winds and it is really cold today, I think that is why the temps dropped so fast. Now I have to look around for more eggs to hatch.

Actually someone has put a cam in thier incubator and put it on marestare.... There have been cams on everything from praying mantis to horses.

I wish I had marestare when my mare was foaling. I ended up missing her foaling cause she was sneaky. My horses also aren't on my property so I couldn't check on her as often as I would have liked. Next time I will definately have her on marestare. I ended up watching marestare all night to keep me up and then driving to check on my mare periodically. Then if a foal died or something on marestare I would get myself all worked up and drive to check on her again lol. I burned a lot of diesel checking on her just to miss her 11am foaling...

What a good little life for them, Kathy. Of course, I am in love with them and the little red goat kid earlier. I do actually have a bit over three acres, but we're not really supposed to have animals here. Maybe someday, after a careful rereading of a few laws. Anyhow, I love to just picture everyone else's critters living here and what a jolly menagerie it would be!

As for my menagerie (1 dog, 2 cats, 10 chickens at present, and a tank full of fish), they are all enjoying the warm weather we've been having. The grass is really green, and everything is blooming about a month ahead of schedule. I need to get some things planted and am already woefully behind!
