Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Just had to share a pic of my broody bantam with her 4, 4-1/2 week old babies. I have no idea how the babies got up on the roost. We have no ladder for the girls and guys to get up there and it's about 4 feet off the floor.

This is simply awesome. I hope to have a broody someday! Too bad I had such bad luck with my silkies. But my girl is loving her new home with her handsome prince.

Kathy, seriously. I don't know how you do it, but your photo essays truly are soooo awesome. You have cute pics but amazing stories which really gives life to those pictures. And who said a picture is worth a thousand words?

TUESDAY WILL BE DAY 10 CORRECT?

A show on TV reported the effects of 1 -2 -3 cans of soda a day on,I can' t remember now, either the heart attack rate or stroke rate, Each level building the chances of doom. I did succeed in having DH switch to sugar free soda with in the last year, as he drinks one everyday on the drive home. THe body is not supposed to be eating high carb diet; I think, what would people be eating 200 years ago: Meats, nuts, whole fruits, yogurt. Of course, whole milk, unless the milkfat was skimmed off. Fresh milk didn't last, it was turned into cheese, yogurt and cultured milk.

Saw a new program on PBS heralding the health improvements one can make just by eliminating all the junk foods and refined carbs, and the result is elimination of type II diabetes and vessels can then repair themselves to prevent arthro schlerosis. I read Atkins 10 years ago and kept my gestational diabetes under control by following the maintenance phase of the diet. Even in the last month of pregnancy I lost 10 pounds, and the baby hatched at 9+ pounds. Only years later did I really follow atkins. I sleep better, my A1c's are better.THis new show said brain fuction is improved too. HE called alzheimers' Diabetes III. Now that's a wake up call!! THe best part it is preventable and simply changing the diet NOW makes a huge difference.

Sorry for the rant. I'm a carb addict and I've had to change my life without the support of the doctors, which are still anti fat and high carb promoters. My life has improved tremendously since giving up breads, sugars, and high starch vegetables.

My DW is a type II diabetic. She has an app on her Droid phone that tracks calories. Last week the App told her she was not eating enough carbs and was eating too much protein. Her cabs were over 40% and the App said she needed to be over 50% carbs...for a Diabetic...Her protein was 23%. I told her she needed more protein, less carbs and more good fat. She checked some more sources and agreed with me. That is the kind of bad information people are getting. My DW went to a nutrition class for Diabetics--turns out the class was focused on how to get insurance to pay for Gastric Bypass surgery

It is very frustrating when our whole American culture has been fed BS. I talked with my mother who was a big dieter in the 70's and she said weight watchers was 100% antifat, not fats allowed. Atkins wrote in one of his earlier books, that he saw many patients with skin problems because of that. Denmark is currently on the Atkins diet craze. ANd eating tons of butter, etc. THe PBS program still didn't buck up against the Medical establishment, and is maintaining a low fat statis.

Can someone please explain why the Inuets ( sorry about spelling) were not fat people while eating whale, fish and seal UNTIL modern food was introduced?? DAAAA . . .

WHen I was pregnant the first time, my OB/GYN sent me to the nutritionist at the hospital, I came home ranting, "She wants me to eat crackers and peanut butter for snacks and eat 300 carbs a day!!!! " My DH supported what I wanted to do for food. Lots of vegies, whole fruit, lamb, steak, salads, and Ben and Jerry's ice cream now and then.

A couple years ago I scoured used book stores for other dieting books, and found a number of low carb diets. All written by MD's. I like Atkins because he includes all the studies, hundreds of studies, to validate the information. THough the others also have interesting points, or a different explanation which helps me understand the biochemistry.

No doctor has told me, but I have figured out that I am teetering on the brink of Diabetes II. If I eat a high load of carbs, I fall asleep. CLUE!!

I did a lot of baking of cookies cakes and breads to feed my carb adiction; I do not make bread any more except for holidays. ANd I think I have my kids down to making cookies and such only once a week. Of course, if I get a craving, I make a batch and eat it! Arghhh . . . .a work in progress.

It reminds me of watching a hen stealing eggs from another's nest... they tuck the eggs under a wing and carry it. Wonder if she did something similar to get them up to the perch?

DH and I are great admirers of animals. Far more clever and gifted than most peolpe give them credit for. And yet we are still amazed at how interesting chickens are!

Very cute pic!! Will you submit it??

ETA: 22 are eggs from the swap and 23 are from my Violet Laced Wyandotte project.

Yes, I have some on my page already, BUT they aren't the best quality. Things have been crazy around here with my MIL so sick.
Oh yeah, that's a new addition to my wish list... Now I'm taking a break to go battle snow. It's not melting fast enough. The sun is warm it should be spring!!!

You're not alone. I've had the same thoughts --only my thoughts are yanked to a halt when I concider an emu living among my horses! Don't think my mare will allow it!
