Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I was a tad disappointed that we haven't gotten more candling reports!!!

I am certainly grateful that most of you have done better than myself.

I gave a partial report haha. First time candeling so I haven't thrown any out, but half of my eggs which are bantam are looking good except for about 3 I'm not sure of. Can't see in any of my large eggs. So a report from me is disappointing in its self.

Yes, Boss. On my way now....................
I fear disappointment. I believe at least one pen of Barred Rocks (that will be about 50 eggs) will all be clears. That dumb boy doesn't like the girls I chose for him.

The cool thing about candling the Icelandics (and I hate candling) is that you can see so clearly into them. They are my favorites to candle.

BAD, BAD, BAD........ I candled one row and more than half are clears.

I'm with you- 5 of the eggs I'm cooking for MyABCs3 are clear, 23 of the Chocolate Project eggs are clear (he clearly preferes certain hens!), and 44 more are clear. I am working on several projects with young pullets, and have a number of shipped eggs.

I DID get one of the 2 good eggs from you to hatch, though, Kathy! One quit a couple of days prior to confinement, and the other is running around in the yard with about 30 pals. :)

Candling Report. All are showing veins.

And I am excited to see veins because I just got a new flashlight and couldn't see veins with my other flashlights. It's an el-cheapo from Costco. It came in a pkg of three for about $18.

All veins were distinct, except one egg where the veins seemed to appear a little watercolor-y. But I left it in. Should have marked it, but only just thought of that just this minute. Oh, well. I'm keeping my

.

Not surprisingly, no shipped eggs involved.

My candling report isn't very exciting EXCEPT that many of my shipped eggs are doing great!!! There were three clears that I pulled and a few with funky aircells that I left in as they are showing veins. I also had to toss 6 that were damaged in shipping, but I didn't have high hopes for them to start with. The others look great. Most of my own eggs are all showing little chicklets kicking around too.

Candling Update:

between candling day 7 and last night here is what i have:

11 shipped silkies (out of 28: 13 clear and 4 quitters)
24 shipped barnyard mix (100% developing)
10 shipped ducks (out of 11: 1 clear)
7 maybe 8 of my own barnyard mix (out of 8 will keep an eye on the maybe one)

52-53 is my count down from 71

all in all the news is pretty good, a little disappointed about the silkies, but i can always try them again
