Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Good news bad news.

Good news -
I can see dark shadows in the AM and Marans eggs that were too thick to see veins in

That's a few less mysteries in the bator.

Bad News -

I dropped an egg while candling

Interesting experiment -

Remember eating glue as a kid? Well we are going to see how chicks like it :) I had a bottle of wood glue on the table where the incubator is. The egg I dropped cracked but didn't break, I don't have any candles in the barn, and I couldn't find the duck tape

so I grabbed what I did have, some glue. I figure, elementary kids have been eating it for decades, it must be safe for eggs

Time will tell

Good morning hatchers.

It snowed here last night.

I'll be replanting my garden in a few weeks, methinks. The ground is completely frozen solid, again. Bye, bye, early spring.

Anyone else candling? We've hit day 10 so it's ok to do (just be careful handling the eggs). If you don't know what you're looking for, just candle a few, and leave them all in unless it's weepy or stinky. You should, however, start to realize what you're looking for after you've done a few. If there's something in the egg (besides the glob of yolk), leave it.

Hmm. Big chunk of precipitation right over my house but it's 35 outside so I hope it just rained. :p I haven't gone outside yet to check - just about to get ready for work and do the chicken chores so we shall see. Since it's above freezing hopefully all my nipple waterers are working.

Thankfully I didn't plant anything yet! I planted once here in April and one bitty freeze killed it all. =(

I kill plants every year putting them out too early. I'm still not used to the seasons here and I get itchy to plant things around February... The first year I was here I had all my plants out in April and they did great cause the warm stayed. I had so many summer squash that year I was pushing them on every poor soul I met, regardless of whether I knew them or not.

Candling report, that I didn't post before going to bed last night: 3 duds, 2 blood rings. 27 viable eggs left, out of 32 to start. Not bad at this point! Crossing fingers, eyes, toes - anything that will cross - for a great hatch for us all!
