Morning Mahonri! It is supposed to get up into the 60's today here. Not bad, I will take it.
Hope you don't have the flu on top of those burns. Who needs any of that?

Good news bad news.

Good news -
I can see dark shadows in the AM and Marans eggs that were too thick to see veins in&nb sp;

That's a few less mysteries in the bator.

Bad News -

I dropped an egg while candling

Interesting experiment -

Remember eating glue as a kid? Well we are going to see how chicks like it :) I had a bottle of wood glue on the table where the incubator is. The egg I dropped cracked but didn't break, I don't have any candles in the barn, and I couldn't find the duck tape

so I grabbed what I did have, some glue. I figure, elementary kids have been eating it for decades, it must be safe for eggs

Time will tell
Sorry about the egg! I candled a few last night, but still have no report because I have no confidence in what I am seeing. I'm quite sure I have a few clears, and I think 3 of the 7 Ameraucanas have blood rings. I'm hoping by this weekend that it will be obvious that the blood rings are not chicks, so I can pull them out. When I candle, I wear some close-fitting rubber gloves, which seems to help with grip (as well as keeping the eggs clean). I put a big blanket on the table just in case, and candle over that, and I use both hands to lift the egg out. Now if I only had a better idea what I am looking for.....

I was a tad disappointed that we haven't gotten more candling reports!!!

I am certainly grateful that most of you have done better than myself.

I didn't candle last night because I had a late shipment of eggs set on Monday, the 19th, so thought I'd wait until tonight to candle everything....day 11 for those I set on time and day 9 for the late ones. I be posting results...........

Kathy, Your BR boy just likes his redheaded girls......you of all people should be able to appreciate that!!

SCG, SNOW.............. I've been trying to temper my desire to get things planted.... it's been so nice......forecast is for 36 F tonight though....

Michelle, If the glue doesn't work....at least you tried!!

Here is my candling report:

Clearly I have no idea what I am doing. They all look like eggs. When I shine a flashlight into them, they still look like eggs- only then they look like glowing eggs. I half expected to see some little chick tappping on the shell and waving at me but that didnt not happen. I did, however, all most pee my pants when I did see something moving in 2 of the eggs. Thankfully I held it together long enough to remember not to drop the egg. Overall, candling is very weird.

As far as posting/submitting pics of human kids for the contest. I did, in fact, submit pics of 2 of my kiddos. I never once thought that anyone would actually be judging MY KIDS, just the picture itself! I would never expect, want, or even accept judgement of my children through one single picture of from people who dont actually know them. I just thought I took a couple of really decent PICTURES

I'm way behind again!! Had to deal with MIA eggs sent via the PO. Tracking stopped at leaving the PO!

Quote: My Turkeys were trying to figure out the mating game yesterday! The old tom on top of a young tom on top of a young hen! HIlarious as only the hen was in the right position!! No eggs though yet. Soon!

No, wait, I've got it...name the turkeys "(Tom) Cruiser" (of course) and "Tilley." If there are more than one hen, then call them "Millie," "Billi," "Gilley," that could go on for a while! Or sticking with the Tom Cruise theme, Kat or Suri or maybe leading ladies?

Have I mentioned I love the name game?

I have Thomas Edison ! Try to get the kids to learn famous people . . .

Oh and one more thing. A week after you set the turkey eggs, set some chicken eggs too. You have probably seen this on the thread but they really do better with chicks to show them the way. They don't imprint as bad as ducks or goslings, but more than chicks do. They are cute. Yeah, I am not so original on the names either. I have a Blackie (well more than one) and a Whitie (wanna guess what color they are?
lau.gif
) Mr. Cogburn is probably the most creative I have gotten. I have a Randy (for the obvious reason), a Goldie, oh and Joe Black (wanna guess what color he is?) and the only other one who has "told" me her name is Curious. She is a small lav AM hen that always cocks her head to look at me.
TUrkeys survive better with a chick to show them the ropes!

Quote: Need a few chicks in with those turkeys!!

For those who have not raised turkeys before, keep in mind that their feed conversion ratio is 2-3# feed per 1# weight gain. So a 10# bird will require 20-30# feed, while a 15# will need 30-45. Multiply that times the number you will be raising, and that will tell you how much feed you will need. And it is a LOT.

A chicken's is 1.6-2# feed per 1# body weight, so for a 7# bird you would use 11.2-14# of feed per bird.
