Well, I guess I'm gonna switch out roosters in that pen tomorrow. I do have a back up that I like, but I really wanted this guy to perform. (I want his tail angle!) Stupid boy......... He's a big boy, and otta make a nice Sunday dinner.

How long has he been in there? I only ask because a year-old heritage boy I was just getting ready to a-dress has suddenly started really stepping up. After being a bonafide girly-man prior to this, he has impressed me with his turn-around. Perhaps your dud will turn dude once he's forced to be with these girls for a long time?

For those who have not raised turkeys before, keep in mind that their feed conversion ratio is 2-3# feed per 1# weight gain. So a 10# bird will require 20-30# feed, while a 15# will need 30-45. Multiply that times the number you will be raising, and that will tell you how much feed you will need. And it is a LOT.

A chicken's is 1.6-2# feed per 1# body weight, so for a 7# bird you would use 11.2-14# of feed per bird.

That is very helpful info, and I'll be cutting and pasting it on the Turkey thread! Thanks!

Is this per day or week.... ???????????

Here is my candling report:

Clearly I have no idea what I am doing. They all look like eggs. When I shine a flashlight into them, they still look like eggs- only then they look like glowing eggs. I half expected to see some little chick tappping on the shell and waving at me but that didnt not happen. I did, however, all most pee my pants when I did see something moving in 2 of the eggs. Thankfully I held it together long enough to remember not to drop the egg. Overall, candling is very weird.

Need a few chicks in with those turkeys!!

Don't worry, I am keeping SCG on the straight and narrow, she understands the rules and WILL abide by them. (violated feelings or not)

My understanding is per pound gained by the bird.

Once, when my oldest DD was 4 years old, we were in Macy's and she stopped to look at the fur coats. She reached up and stroked the arm of one of the fur coats. "Oooh Mommy! These feel like bunny rabbits!" "Awww" said an elderly woman standing with a friend nearby.

"Are these coats made from bunnies, Momma?" "Yes", I replied. This got more adoring looks and murmers from the 2 elderly ladies but made me a bit nervous since I never knew what my adorable, sweet looking little four year old might say. "Did they have to kill the bunnies to make these coats Momma?" "Yes", I answered, trying to gently pull her away from the coats (this provoked sympathetic looks from the ladies). Then those sympathetic looks quickly turned to horror as my DD said loudly, "Mmmmmm, wish I had the meat"!!!

You just never know what kids are going to think!

When we served Thanksgiving dinner the adults asked me who we were eating and I would answer in a whisper if my neice or nephews were around, but when dinner was over my 5 year old nephew hopped down from his chair and said "Lancelot was delicious!"

He did great with those New Hampshires he was with, though I did wonder (because I never did see him mate them). Anyway, he has always preferred to hang out with the New Hampshires since then. When I do free range different breeds at the same time, they all generally stay with their own pen of mates. Not this one though. He heads right for the New Hampshires, and always has. If I let his pen out, I can not let out the New Hampshires. He will then just hang around their pens, pacing around them. It is weird..........

Hmmm. I wish I could remember where I read that they're now thinking that chickens may mate for life or at least form some attachments that can last a lifetime. Obviously, the roosters would mate with more than one hen for life. It's not like they're Canadian geese or something.

Remember eating glue as a kid?

Nope. Thanks for asking. I ate dogfood. I don't remember that either.

(And yes, I am sorry about your dropped egg and look forward to hearing if the glue works.)

Have a great day!

Thank you! What a happy icon!

Wait a minute! Have you turned your video on to run continuously? I left the window up from yesterday. These are the noises I'm hearing coming out of my computer that I think could be coming from your video: shuffling, spoon clinking in a cereal bowl, shuffling, someone opening a beer, squawking of young dinosaur, refrigerator door shutting, shuffling, dog bark, someone opening another beer, squawking of young dinosaur, barking, more metal scraping on ceramic, some snapping, sound of someone taking a bite of an apple, and more shuffling. I'm feeling a little voyeuristic. (I am not saying that you're opening beers in the morning or squawking like a dinosaur, but I am hearing sounds like that coming randomly out of my computer.) I hope you do have your video/audio playing LIVE or I've got a really odd computer virus.

The incubator is still in view, barely, but it's very dark in the room. It says LIVE up in the corner and that it's been on for 2 hours and then that it's been on for 3 hours.

Well, I think this is just an odd case, really. See, when I was making my project F1s I used one particular rooster. Several months later I decided to use another one, for a little diversity and out of curiosity. That is this boy (Barred Rock). He did great with those New Hampshires he was with, though I did wonder (because I never did see him mate them). Anyway, he has always preferred to hang out with the New Hampshires since then. I think he is just in love with the read heads.

Congrats Debs_flock on the win

It's a great idea and I will be trying that out sometime.

I am finally caught up ....for now.

This weekend I snapped some shots of my dominant roo, Carl, canoodling with his favorite hen, Rebecca. They groom each other, roost next to each other, she has refusal rights! and there is what certainly LOOKS like affection between them. He's got King's Rights to the whole flock and often exercises them, but Rebecca can say no and he just finds another concubine; she's his First Wife and beloved partner. (She also laid the egg which Buffy hatched for her to produce my very first GrandChick, nearly two years ago.) I can't post any photos from my iPad today, but I'll put them up this evening when I get home.

I have witnessed the very same thing with my birds. There is always a favorite sister-wife and it's terrible to break up those relationships, so I generally don't.

I'm about to give away a roo ad will have to give away his favorite, as well. They're in loooooooooooooove.
