Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I set 15 EO Basque Hen egg. 13 made it to lockdown with one questionable. 9 have hatched so far and I have 2 pips working on getting out.

First three in Brooder

I'm definitely jealous. My 15 EO eggs have yielded 8 chicks, and the other eggs have just been sitting silent.

Could have been the extra days of shipping (shipped Friday, arrived on a Wednesday) or maybe I did something. Dunno. All of the eggs from my flock hatched just fine, so I'm thinking it was just shipping.

Right now, Cup is in my shirt because the others were picking at him by his eye. I've got the baby parrot food and he's had one dose already. I figure I'll carry him around a bit, spare him the stress of being picked for a few hours, and feed him the parrot food every half hour or so.

Still just one chick and two somewhat more progressed pips in the incubator. I'm thinking it's running a bit cool and dragging out my hatch. It was very cold last night, so the house temps may have dropped a few degrees more than normal. The incubator is in the room with the thermostat and gas stove, however, so it should have been fine....

I had to do a triple-take on this photo. The little grumpy face behind the chick cracks me up. There is a "I would like to eat Mommy's little pet" vibe.

Haha! She is actually probably thinking.."Come on, chick..dont make me run away from my sun beam!" She is my literal chicken cat. Runs from everything...all my other cats chase her, just because she runs. She knocks everything off the shelves and counters, making her get-away as fast as she can.

She had been sound asleep when I set the chick down.

I am amazed at how well these are hatching. This is better than the Marans and Dorking eggs from local breeders. One pipped egg is pushing at the pip, so I hope it will zip soon. The other has a 1/4 inch hole and I think I see the chick moving inside it. It looks dark in there so I don't think there is shrink wrap going on. This one pipped in the night, so it's probably been sitting for 8 hours so I am not too worried about it. Of the two left without pips, one was probably a quitter at lockdown. The other looked big an dark inside, so I still hope it makes it too.

Me too. My brooder box (all wood) I rescued from a pile outside a dumpster. All I could think was, why would someone want to throw away a perfectly good brooder?

Oh and I got 2 silkie eggs at the swap to put in with the turkeys...
Ah, so we were "unsupervised" and able to make the exchange!

DH still hasn't counted all the turkey eggs.

I finally had one hatch!

Then 30 mins later it died

I dont know why though....But I have others pipping so I'm happy

Sometimes it just happens. Could be something internally wrong. Don't beat yourself up over it. If it hatched, you did everything you could do.

Well I have 19 out and another 8 or 10 pips. I have to say that I am actually feeling a little more nice to styrobators now. I might even give it some of my turkey eggs to hatch. I definitely like the space in there for the hatched ones. I love my Brinsea but there is just no headroom once a chick hatches and they are forced to crawl all over the other eggs. For anyone thinking, well put less eggs in there, I say BLASPHEMY! If there is an open spot, I have an egg for it!

Just tested and my posting issues continue. Maybe if everyone elses is getting resolved, I might need to restart the computer

I've got 28 out so far. I'm thinking the humidity got up too high for the quail. I haven't had anymore hatch........yet. I'm not giving up on them yet. Each broody has a chick so far.

My two silkies are still in the shell. We can see them but they haven't came out of it. My dad said we might need to step in an assist because they been that way for two hours. I have an Ameraucan almost done zipping and another one starting. So that will be 3 Am's if they make it!! I pray these Silkies start pipping and I didn''t do something wrong. :(
