Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Ok ok I'm in. You've convinced me. :p

Going to cancel the hatchery order. SuperRX will sell me some eggs to cover my colored layer/NN fixation and I'll see what else I can find.

I really like getting those hatchery boxes filled with mostly girl babies (no roos to send to their doom) but I also hate that they have to sit in the postal system for days after hatch.. Hatching is more fun. ;)

Sometimes these conversations that stretch out over hours are kinda hard to keep up with!

Don't tell anyone---especially not my husband---but I found some duck eggs and tossed them in the incubator.
But dear! I thought they were REALLY HUGE chicken eggs!!...with weird thick, slick shells. Anyone could make that mistake.

He might buy it, if he is like my husband and has no clue about the chickens. But I doubt that he is.

You are gonna be in trouble in about a month!

taz........settle down.....you're starting to sound like Mahonri when he loses it.......SuperRX is SuperChemicalGirl's alias or is that her real name

hmmm..........whatever......I think Featherz said SCG was going to get those to her for the hatchalong!!

No, I didn't mark them differently. In fact I had them in different trays and then sorted them according to color. (Maybe I am a little OCD

) They are due on 3-8 in the evening. Between your eggs, a set of swap eggs and 27 of my eggs, I set a whopping 72 eggs.

I also candled my 4 pea eggs and I have 2 that are growing!!! Not that I can keep them.

Oh Geez I usually do that. Congrats on the Peas growing. I'd like to hatch those and some Emu and also can't keep them, but I don't care. Not had any great hatches as of late except with my own eggs, so I need to tweek some things I think. Maybe if things don't get crazy during this hatch I can figure out what goes wrong.

I picked up my brooder. It's awesome! It is 2'x4' and very well-made. I didn't know until I showed up there, but it is the carpentry professor at a local university selling them. I didn't even know they had a carpentry program, but I picked it up at a university building which was nice because you never know what you're getting into with Craigslist.

Anyway, let's see if I can post some pictures:

You can attach an arm for a heat lamp:

There's a panel to remove for cleaning I suppose and another little hinged door for access, although I might like a bit more access for cleaning.

And it is really sturdy!

He's sold 12 so far at $50 a pop, so that's a good response for about a week on Craigslist. He and his son keep chickens which must be how he got the idea. Anyway, let's see if this posts...

ETA: Wohoo! Success!

By the way, be thinking of what ingenious chicken designs you could share with the rest of us and enter into the contest during our hatch! I don't know which week it will end up being, although it looks like I may need to just pick one, but start thinking about it now! It could be a brooder, feeder, waterer, saddle, coop, roost, run, chicken swing (although I haven't seen Melissa Rose in a bit), ramp, coop light, coop ventilation, water collection system, protection from predators, chicken tractor, chicken diaper, carrying cage, ....

You get the idea.
