Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

hide.gif

There's going to be a public art installation in my town (Lawrence) where they'll have 5 hens downtown in parks and whatnot for 3 weeks, then a public slaughter, then a potluck with them the next day. I'm conflicted.

barnie.gif

It's not a small town (100K) It's a college town (Kansas Jayhawks) We have a lovely walking downtown with historic buildings and street musicians and occasionally buskers.

Is it art?

It's all over the news...
Interesting, for sure. Hmmm, honestly....... I think that is great. A great way for people to see where their food comes from. I applaud them!

Art? No, I do not see it as art.

REJOICE, MY PEEPS!

...and I walked home with a brand-spanking new Hovabator. I think my FIL was happy there wouldn't be another llizard population explosion. My DH was a little bit less happy---but now I have a hatcher-bator AND something to take egg-overflow. WOOOHOOO!

DON'T TELL MAHONRI......

Hey everyone! I message Mahonri to let him know I was in so I didn't get lost in the posts.

I'll be hatching 2 dozen RIR eggs. I wish I could sneak another breed over on my dad, but the only other breed I have are games. One of them is currently broody and it's her first year. I suppose I could ask my neighbor down the road for some of his EEs.... Now there's an idea!

I am recruiting. This is what I posted on a few of the more active breed threads. Think it will work?

Just thought I would stop by to tell you all a little about the annual Mahonri Easter Hatch, and give you a little sample of the fun there. There are TONS of contests and prizes in the works. Some contests have actually already started, and MANY more are coming. (I always like the "caption this," contest.

). To let you in on a little secret..... some of the prizes are gonna be VERY valuable! Many contests have not even been announced yet. So, if you are interested, check it out here.

Mahonri's 3rd Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long Contests

1. Best Hatch Rate
For this contest during this hatch, participants will need to be setting a minimum of 24 eggs, with confirmation picture posted to this thread on set day. These can be under a couple of broodies or in your incubators. Tell us how many you will have cooking and then don't go back and edit your post where you tell us how many eggs you start with. We'll need that info by Monday the 19th of March at latest to be included in the contest. When the hatch is over, you'll take a pic and post it to show us how many you actually got...the picture must be of sufficient quality to count all the chicks.
In the event of a tie, the one who hatches the most chicks wins.

Yes, that's what we like to see....finding more eggs to set!

Thanks for adding more icons for me, Kathy! Great idea to post that in other threads.

I just had to bring my New Years chicks back inside - they've been out there almost a week. Sadly, the speckled sussex were ready to rock and roll (one of them was outside running around on the crusty snow) but the showgirls are entirely too tiny. My rooster also tried to kill a SS yesterday, and my "mean girl" just pecked at everyone like she always does - she's a nightmare. I removed the offenders this morning and then let the kids out. There was some moderate pecking (they've been in a cage in the coop since Wednesday I think to acclimate) like you'd expect, and they did fine. Unfortunately the showgirls are still pretty much chick-sized and too meek to run away. They also can fit in the holes in the fence and get out. That, combined with the hawk circling yesterday made me bring them back inside. Maybe another few weeks til the showgirls get big enough? I bet they're enjoying the move back to the house, though, I have the basement wood stove on and it's about 80 degrees down there.

These are the pictures of the 60 Silver Gray Dorkning eggs I set yesterday. The first picture is of the new sytle Genesis 1588. There is a new control center that has temp and humidity displayed, along with the set temperature. Set temp can be changed from this display. You hold the up or down arrow for 5 seconds and the set temp goes up or down by tenth degrees.

First tip: remove the plug
Second tip: keep humidity above 20% but less than 30%. The new Genisis has better control of this with a smaller deep water holder in the bottom.
Third tip: Use a Water Weasel

Old Genesis

Water Weasel with two probes

Temp on one is 99.1 The second one is 98.8. Humidity is not accurate because the probe is in the weasel(Nursery Rhyme.

I will try out other tips later.
