I love my BlueKote, I have a bottle with a fuffy daubber so I can dab it on, it's easier than trying to spray a moving target. It stains everything it touches, which is good when you are dying a white silkie purple, not so good if you wear your brand new sneakers to the barn on accident
It takes about 8 days to wear off your hands, depending on how many times you wash dishes by hand.

Not that I would know anything about being a mess...

I will tell you, I have experienced this ONE time. I had a brooder of 12 birds. ONE culprit picking at the others. Soon, a couple others started it. They were all bloody. I finally had to separate them into groups of 2, and watch them. I finally found the culprit, but only after 2 chicks were killed.

Looks like we are actually going to get rain... and of course we had our irrigation turn yesterday for the first time since December as the canal was closed for cleaning and repairs.

Told DS#2 his job tomorrow is to get ALL of the leaves out of the pool.

The wind is REALLY blowing out there... I think that's what woke me up...

and of course, Laree will get more rain than we do because she lives further north...

I read an old post on here about it and they mentioned that using pam would get rid of the mites, so since I have a can laying around I've been using it. I'll get a pic of her legs some time tomorrow. I'm off to bed for the night.

Good morning, hatchers.

I give my chicks something "to do" to keep them from being bored in the brooder and minimize pecking. I put some of their food (I use 22% protein) crumbles into a dish and then soften it with hot water. They peck away happily at it, and learn to scratch on it. I usually start with a small saucer and gradually move up to a more bowl like dish as they get bigger. I replace it every 12 hours even if there's food left to reduce the risk of spoilage.

I also bought a dowel and made a small roost for the brooder. They seem to enjoy climbing on that once they're a few days old.

I guess I'll be going to work today, I don't feel like I need to crawl back into bed in the fetal position.

One thing I like to "do" is to watch the chickens throughout the year (or years) to see which are the best free-range foragers and which hens are oldest and still laying well. I try to get at least a few eggs from those hens to set in the incubator. Those are good genes. (If I'm repeating myself from earlier in this thread, I apologize.)

someone said that they use makeup wipes to get the stuff off, but the baby wipes will do the same thing as well.

THis is great! We always get it on us, and everything else, during shearing. Have to be quick to get the cuts on the sheep and the near mayhem gets the permanent stain on other things so easily.
I had the bluekote for the horses, so use it for the sheep too.

Note of cuation: there is RED KOTE, red isn't the color to be using on chicks.
