Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

images

We are only 18 days away from setting chicken eggs! During the next two weeks, "eggs will be flying" from all four corners of the country to be set for the Easter Hatchalong....from the Deep South to Alaska, from coastal Maine to the desert Southwest and all the "fly-over" in between! Be sure your name is on the list in Post # 1, if not, post here and PM Mahonri and tell him you're in!!!

Good morning, hatchers.

I give my chicks something "to do" to keep them from being bored in the brooder and minimize pecking. I put some of their food (I use 22% protein) crumbles into a dish and then soften it with hot water. They peck away happily at it, and learn to scratch on it. I usually start with a small saucer and gradually move up to a more bowl like dish as they get bigger. I replace it every 12 hours even if there's food left to reduce the risk of spoilage.

I also bought a dowel and made a small roost for the brooder. They seem to enjoy climbing on that once they're a few days old.

I guess I'll be going to work today, I don't feel like I need to crawl back into bed in the fetal position.
Glad you are feeling better!!

I have lot of kids toys around and put in cild safe toys like plastic rhino, building blocks, Make a wooden bridge, too.

Helps to have a very large brooder with twice the usual space. Enough room for plenty of toys.

Well, I'm postponing my trip to Wichita, so I won't be hauling chicks and eggs south today. Taking DD1 to the doctor, then have to go put finishing touches on roofs for a big rainstorm today.

Set tons of eggs in the FarmGirl NQB8R a couple of days ago, and and I'm desperately hoping they all hatch by the set time or I'll have to evacuate them into the LGs and RCom. I have a GROSS of eggs in there. I do fully expect to have to pull a bunch, because I have a young and fluffy roo in with 10 hens and he's not getting the fertility as well as I'd like.

Waiting on the last 20 or so eggs I have set in the little incubators and then I'm not setting any for a couple of weeks. I sterilized and took apart the RCom last night, and will hatch all of these 20 in there.

I'll sell everything that is laid until March 7th- then everything is for setting or shipping!!! Get with me now about egg for the hatch- Konzas are sold out, but I still have Banty Cochins, mixed Banty Cochin Frizzles, Orpington project colors, Chanteclers, d'Uccles, and I'll post more later.

Yay!!

I couldn't wait...I'm setting Iowa Blues and Wheaton/Blue Wheaton Ameraucanas from peachick tonight!

I'll have to double stack Bator #2 on 3/17 until this batch hatches, but I think that will work out just fine.
So far for the Easter hatch I'm planning to set Welsummers, BBS Copper Marans, Icelandics and of course Iowa Blues. If all comes through that will be at lease 75 eggs.

I don't actually remember what I'm setting, thank goodness I can go back through my PMs.

I believe I have Marans coming, and I joined the swap so Easter surprise there, and I will probably set a few more turkeys and fill the rest of the brooder space with Icelandics.

I had wanted to add some blue eggs to the mix but it seems there was some big hatch going on

or something. Folks are actually selling out of hatching eggs. Who knew that could happen? I guess that newspaper article was right. Egg shortages are coming...
