Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Good grief!

I'm gone for 10 hours and 100 posts later here I am again.

And I must say, I've been very entertained reading the past hour or so of posts.

And congrats Arrielle!

You should check out Barry Harmon's Artisan bread site. Excellent recipes!! His Bagel recipe is the best I have tried and my favorite bread is his Artisanal 85% hydration bread. Perfect thick chewy crust with a beautiful crumb.

Here is the link: http://artisanbreadbaking.com/bread/wet_85/

Thanks!!! I LOVE collecting and trying new recipes. I already have a great bagel recipe, I'll have to do a comparison taste test! My DH always says with all my baking and canning for Fairs......someone has to eat all the tests!

I went to DS#1's class to retrieve the Hovabator and candle the 26 day eggs. The hatch was a complete fail. When I candled them I saw that some appeared to have been infertile or killed very early (nearly clear) and some were dark all the way through with no sounds and a small air sack. Two or three had three layers, the air sack, a clear area in the center and a third, dark area. What does that tell me about what happened?

I left the eggs with the teacher. I took them some ziplock bags, a large egg tray, and some rubber gloves. I warned her to take the eggs outside to do the egg-topsies. I am glad I am not going to be there tomorrow!

Cleaning out the bator tomorrow, cranking it up Thursday to calibrate the temp, and starting egg collection this coming Sunday....... I'm getting excited!

Sorry to hear about their hatch............but at least you're getting your incubator back!

Thanks, Deb. There were five Campine eggs there, I hoped some would hatch but they were all clear. I am not going to try the eggs I have from the last Campine hen, I am just going to order some.

I took my camera out to the coop to try to get some shots for the contests. I laughed out loud at some of them, here they are....enjoy.

This is the funniest one, to me..... I call it, "Check me out!"

Oh, and here are someold pics of the guinea box that I was talking about a few posts back. The guineas in the pic are the ones that were brooded in the box. Can you believe thay they all tried to get in that box at night to sleep?!!?

Guineas are so silly.

Buddy is really checking her out.

And I love the guineas. Our neighbors have some, so I get all my listening to guineas I need by walking out back. And I see them as insurance that they'll never complain about all my roosters.

mahonri, do you have a puppy update? how is momma doing?

No, not bad, the chickens don't talk back and you don't have to send them to school. Besides, when you get tired of the chickens, you can eat them!

LOL yes, i suppose my kids should feel lucky!

sad to hear about your classroom lack of hatch. i will be setting eggs with a class for this hatchalong and am nervous about it now. anything you can think of that i should watch out for? any tips? thanks.

The first puppy out that was born without a tail or hipbones has passed on. I had planned to cull it but then nature took it's course for me.

The other two, a LARGE male and a female are doing great. Lilly is an awesome mother. We have had so many people call and ask for pups.
I had to tell another person today that we couldn't give them one. The kids want to keep the male but I told them I've already promised him to a patient.
The owner of the stud has dibs on the female pup as a gift to his next door neighbors.

So, DW thinks we should put her with another registered Golden as she can see it's easy to give away the pups to LOVING, CARING owners.

Perhaps then we would keep one of the larger female pups as Lilly is getting older.

I'll have to show you pics. I just think it's weird that you can have a chocolate father with a red mother and the pups come out COAL BLACK!.
