Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Marking my spot.

Thank the LORD, I have a day off tomorrow. But, I still have way too much to do....

DS#2 will be driving by himself to Utah tomorrow. I'm praying for good weather for him.

God bless the folks in OH, VA, MA, ID & VT today.

I read all the posts everyday, but just do not have time to participate as much as I would like to. I have had time to pray for those with illness in the family [including pets] and for Wolftracks to recover quickly from her surgery, and only wish I could have taken the time to log in and give them more support. It makes my heart grateful to see others supporting them on the thread though.

I started to set eggs yesterday, looked at the calender, and decided to save them for this hatch.

Time flies when you are having fun, busy, or old;
I fit all three categories, either all or most of the time.

Sounds like my house. All I have to do is head for the hallway and four dogs sprint into the bathroom, spin around and stand there waiting for me to join them. Fortunately, the four of them will generally lay down and wait for me to........ahem.........finish. In true Pavlovian style, when you reach for the TP, everyone jumps up because it is time to vacate the room (I avoided saying it's time to go

) However, occasionally someone will try to climb into my lap, never let a lap go to waste. Just try to get off the commode with a great dane attempting to sit in your lap and three border collies pressed to your shins.

oh Deb,

Thanks for the visual

No dogs here, just cats. If I drop something on the floor the cats will walk over, look at it and walk away, tail held high. nothing I eat holds much interest for them. :p

DD #1's cat eats at least a bite of everything she eats. cereal, fruit, bacon (ok, that's basically a gimme) she even drinks her apple juice. But only if she gets there before the dog

Well I may be in I'll update later lol... My husband suprised me with a bator this morning
wee.gif
. With one condition... I don't buy eggs
barnie.gif
I'm not sure he knows how this works since my hens aren't laying, this will be their first year to lay so who knows when they will start. This will be our first time to incubate eggs if we get any

Who do you know that might have some extra eggs? Maybe someone who needs a "test hatch" to check fertility. Or perhaps someone who just has too many eggs.

Okay, so I was just standing at the laundry sink, scrubbing out the bator, and DS#1 comes running in, carrying a flashlight and saying come quick. I shut the water off and followed him out the back door at a trot. Now, I'm not much of a trotter, but he is on the cross country team and once he hit the back door he broke into a full sprint. I called after him but he ran up the hill and into the woods. I was not sure what was going on but he kept saying to hurry, so I did. Once in the woods, he was shining the flashlight up into the trees. When he stopped, it allowed me to catch up. About that time he said, "There it is!" I looked up and there was an opposum in the top of a small tree. We stood there looking at it for a while trying to decide what to do. I asked DS if he could shoot it. He said he could if it were getting the chickens. That was about how I felt. It just didn't set well with me to just shoot it out of the tree so I went over and shook the tree. The opposom fell out and hit the ground and the chase was on! This time I was in the lead and frantically calling the dog (an elderly lab) because I didn't want it to get away and it was running straight for the chicken coop! Suddenly a black streak went past me and the dog hit the opposom broadside and it sulled. The dog picked it up and trotted over to me. He was so proud of himself! I told DS to get the live trap, and told the dog to drop it. I picked up the opposom and dropped it into the live trap. Now I can haul it off and not have to kill it and not have to worry about it either! GOOD DOG!
Awesome for you and your son. Give that dog any treat he likes. Good boy!

whew! All caught up.

I managed to get the driveway all plowed out with the exception of a portion of the RV pad. We don't have an RV, it's just overflow parking and we don't have any big parties planned so it won't hurt for it to wait till tomorrow.

It's been a beautiful evening, I've done all my catching up and now I'm off to do a little writing and get ready for bed.

Are we any closer to 200 yet? I think I saw one or two new recruits.

Come on lurkers, join the fun.

Okay. Caught up.

I was going to use this image

, but it just made me crave hot chocolate. Hmmm. Typing about hot chocolate just made me want it more. Maybe laced with a little ... brandy? But then I couldn't make Steak Diane later this week which requires that little bit of brandy in the bottle. Hmmm. Decisions. Decisions.

I scooped it up and put it in the chicken goody pitcher. Did I already write that earlier? Whatever. Sleepy.

Well the high is supposed to be in the 50's today but yesterday it certainly did not look like spring at the big coop on the hill.

Wow, she is stunning. I thought I was going to end up with two chickens like this from a Black Copper Marans X green egg layer, but all I got was plain blue without the red head.

I collect a hundred bags of leaves off of the curbs in the fall so that I can dump them on the snow in the winter. They make a fabulous windbreak along the fences until I need them, and when everything melts, they keep it from getting slick. I toss millet, alfalfa, clover and grass seeds in when it's time to grow, and the litter allows some of it to hide until it sprouts so they have greens.

Yes! I love the leaves in winter. The chickens do, too. Of course, I only get about 7 - 10 big bags of them, but that's enough for us. The chickens eat them ... well, maybe only a couple of leaves each ... when I first throw a few out. The are perfect for making paths in the snow for the chickens and me. The ones I end up with are dry and are great inside the coop, too. I throw hay out on top of the leaves sometimes if it's windy to keep the leaves from all blowing away and it just gives the chickens more to do (scratching) and more sprouts in spring from the seeds they don't find. I still have one bag left!

"getting stomped by a moose"

I saw you made it back in without getting stomped. Glad for that.

This is a little surprising to me. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised, but I would have never imagined that I would find two other people joining in on Mahonri's 3rd Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long who had fond memories of Depoe Bay. When very young, I started my first sea voyage (oh, dear, it may have been my only sea voyage) at Depoe Bay on a tourist-style fishing boat. My memories are few and vague. 1. I was scared. 2. Someone was leaning over the rail feeding the fish in an unvolutary manner.

It's just the lakenvelder I am depressed over.

Oh, those are such pretty birds. So sorry.

Look what I hatched Sat.
A frizzled....Naked Neck...Easter Egger.

Oh, what a fun combo! You did hatch out more than just one, right? Ya' gotta have more than one!

Razadia: Your little chicks are darling, and I like your jammies, too.
