Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Thanks for the prayers. I know they worked.

I burnt myself by spilling some boiling hot soup on me last night. Most painful thing I've ever experienced (and I've had 3 kidney stones)

I think I'll be OK.

Many thanks to Kathy who stuck with me for a couple hours into the wee morning hours.

I'm going to try and go to work.

I could still use all your prayers so keep them coming..

Hey, did AKMichelle ever fess up about what she was being mysterious about the other day? What was that?

Yeah. I agree. What was that, AKMichelle?

What's her name, ChestnutRidge? I have been following this saga and am now invested.

Since in the past, I have been a total failure at candling, I was very excited when I tried a new flashlight and actually saw an air cell!

So I am wondering, when my shipped eggs arrive, if the air cells look normal, should I still avoid turning them for 5 - 7 days? I planned to follow the procedure that ronott posted, but can lack of turning ever result in harm? If I put my own non-shipped eggs in the incubator with the shipped eggs and no turner, do I have to hand-turn my own eggs, or will they be fine just sitting there? I have been turning the eggs I'm collecting for the hatch each day so far.

Anyone have any ideas on this? Thanks.

If the air cells appear very normal, then 24 hours is good, right? Probably. That's how I would handle it. Or I might wait 1 extra day.

I would hand tilt my own eggs. For optimal results, that's what should happen if you want to do things "by the book." However, they could be just fine sitting there, but odds are that better results will happen with tilting/turning.

I had ordered RC Brown Leghorns and Wheaton Marans from Gabbard for the hatch, but it seems the Marans aren't laying. This means I may get Barnevelders, Blue Birchen Marans, or .... Sumatras. I'm sort of obsessed with Sumatras at the moment, so I realllly hope that is what I get.

When do you find out!? Even the Blue Birchens would be cool. Not as cool as Sumatras, but still nice. Score.

My emu kids had a visitor today...... a brooder jumper.....
She looked at them..............
And then, looked at herself.................
And then, screamed bloody murder, "GET ME OUTTA HERE !"

Poor little chicky. Where is Part Deux?

Welcome!

"Look at me. Look at me." I am all caught up! (Is quote from old Shakespearean-style Heath Ledger movie.)

Oh my Mahonri! I know that must have hurt bad! I remember as a very little boy, and my older brother and I had dumped boiling water on both of us from the stove! We were screaming from the pain. Hope you get better soon and able to to your job well at work.

Been there, done that, with water in a pot at college. Still have the scar fortunately it is very faded and not noticable now.. Can you get silvadene???? By script only. Really does reduce the scarring. Won't help with the pain, but good for long term repair of the burn site.

Glad you were alright. We were all worrying.

Oh, dear. Sorry for pain. Glad Kathy could stick with you for companionship, etc.

(I almost always post the SMACK smiley by accident. That would not be apropos.)

Do any of you remember this exciting auction..... way back when.... (5-2-2010). It was quite the auction back then! $822.25 for 12 eggs..... very special eggs.
(Jamesrm was the winner), and this was his post (post # 292 in the auction thread).....

I really miss the excitement of the old auction format. It was such fun.

When I read it, I DID cry. But sadly, I would do the same with the cards I have just to get some of those pretty birds.

On another note, I love Magic the Gathering, but I have no one to play with....

X2; Silvadene is the bomb for healing burns quickly. You can use Oragel on them for pain, too- makes a world of difference. I used to be a sous chef and have loads of experience.

Soooooo glad you aren't off somewhere in an ER bed! I was getting the weird mom-to-the-world thing going and was considering calling your office to check on you...then I thought better of it. Nosy Posy, always needing to mom people!!

I'm off to get coffee (out of milk here) and get to the farm. I'm going to ogle SparkyCrows's Blue Barred Rock project and see what else she's got up her sleeve. I think between the two of us, if we could create a horse-chicken or an emu-chicken we would...we sit around and talk about genes like other folks talk about sports and politics.

Have a glorious day, everyone!!

Egg whites heal burns FAST. I read this somewhere and have used it many times and it works like a charm. Crack an egg in a little dish, use your finger, a spatula, whatever, drizzle/spread the egg white on the burned area. I usually put 3 or 4 coats on. Generally, once the air is blocked the pain decreases. I know modern science will debunk this theory but it works at our house. My 12 yr old DS will tell you proudly that it is the best thing ever. The first time we tried it, out of desperation, he thought I was nuts. Now he gets the egg himself. He's learning to cook and has burned himself 3 or 4 times in the past year. When I tried it on myself after bumping the 350* oven rack it cut the pain by about 2/3 (at least) still sore and tender but not raging pain, and to me, it seemed to heal faster than burns usually do. I left it on over night and washed it off in the shower the next morning.

Of course that means one more egg that doesn't get to go in the bator...
