Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

No need to hide that here, 1muttsfan... we understand.

Ok... I am needing to post my eggs for the contests and whatnot. So, here's my picture! But how do I change my entry form to 14 instead of 12? Arielle was nice enough to send extras, but I can't figure out how to change the form... :(

Cool egg tray. I love that L-egg-os are used ... probably the oddest use of Legos ever, but very practical. Can this be entered in the contest for "Best Chicken Paraphernalia Design" (or whatever the proper name of that contest is)?

Well...I have an unpleasant experience to share.

Wrong. Always treat the chicken outside.

Then she shook.

I was covered in mites.

"Mites" is a dirty word around here.

Is anyone keeping track of all the funny things people write in this thread. Sort of the "humor reel" of sorts? If so, I hope you added the post immediately above and the post immediately below.
I am sooo sleepy, and the DH is witchy. Men have "girl times" too.

Finally. I struggled with that until now. I couldn't figure out who would be calling in the middle of the night with the initials MN.

I a now sick from wading through that fridged cold water to keep them fed and watered.

You poor thing. It sounds horrible what you're dealing with. I think "heck of a week" is an understatement.

So I'm caught up on this thread. Big incubation news around here? The broodies are sticking to their nests, but I'm not putting eggs under until tonight. I've been too tuckered out at night to do it. So they're not in this hatch-a-long and weren't listed in the official listing either. Thanks to the folks that mentioned tissue paper (or similar) to cushion stacked eggs in the Brinsea Octagon incubator. I ended up using crumpled parchment paper which works like a dream. I can now quickly tilt the incubator without any clinking of eggs. Lastly, I'm reading some article on how chicks can be made to feel safe if they smell certain smells. It seems to indicate that chicks can form memories based on smells sort of like we do. Y'all probably already knew that, but I didn't.

You might want to consider not having eggs in the slots right by the turner motor. I've heard it can get overheated from the heat of the motor. Or at least swap that egg with another each day so no egg spends too much time there. Some turners even have a blank spot there so it can't be used.
But I suppose everyone's experience varies.
Good luck with your hatch,
Deb

X's 2...I don't put mine by it, and I only keep my temps around 99.1 to 99.3 because the egg holder is up closer to the heating elements..those eggs are warm when I touch them at those temps..warm enough!

I'm so disappointed in all of you. Only took minutes to catch up since 230. Having issues with my homemade turner, but still gonna set while I revise it. Hopefully none of my eggs fall and break!

There are 666 posts I need to read since Saturday.

....maytbe I shouldnt read them.

ANYWHOOS: I am sorry for being such a slacker. I am so busy with stuff, and just found out an old-old friend of mine lost his battle with cancer.

To anyone who has PM'd me, I REALLY am trying to get caught up. Really.

Back to work.

No falling! No breaking! Or you will feel like this.>>

had that fertility problem with 17 cochin banty eggs last month. all duds. A friend of mine sold her banties their was a hen sitting for 9 days and another hen that had just started to sit on 6 or 7 eggs. Ran over to get then. waited 7 days to candle them. All empty Even the eggs that the hen had sat on for the nine day hadn't even started. They were just yolks all seventeen.
This time I checked some egg just to see if they fertile.
6 of the 7 tested egg were fertile.......

I was pleasantly surprised by peeping this morning coming from a pipped egg due to hatch yesterday. [I usually have some pips by day 20 at the latest.] It is sitting in the half shell now, and waiting to see if the other hatches or if I need to go buy it some company. I set 10 pullet eggs and 2 Silver Ameraucana X Red Sexlink hen eggs to test fertility, and none of pullet eggs developed; not a great forecast on hatch rate for my Easter hatch.

Don't be makin' fun of the old Farm Master 'bator now............

Just so you all know, I woke my husband up with a full-on cackle because apparently when I read, I have a voice in my head. It said something weird and stopped my eyes, which went back up to re-read...There is finally a reason I can cite for why I don't like to call them 'bators now. I couldn't say why, prior...I just preferred the whole word.
