Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Quote: Ron how do you have your eggs tested. I started using Laynea Plus about 3 months ago and was interested in if it really works or am I wasting my money. Thank you Michele
That is a great reason to test. It looks like the Lab at UCD does not test the eggs. I took a pullet in for a Necorpsy there and it was free. The test said all was disease and samonella free.

I am checking with the Pacific Poultry Association to see what is available here. I found an article about eggs with lead in them in Portland. I am not worried about lead since I live in a house built in 1995 and before that it was a field.

Does any one here test their eggs? Testing was mentioned in the Chicken Whisperers book but he does not tell you how to have them tested. To an old time poultry person, he probably thinks we know where to have stuff like that done.

Does CA have a free testing and inspection program?? I know some states do and others do not. Perhaps contacting the state inspectors is the route to finding a suitable testing lab.

Hi everyone i have a question duing this hatch i am attempting my first stacked eggs in the incubators my question is the eggs that are stacked on top do they get turned properally? once a day i go to the incubators and switch the eggs on top with eggs that are in the turner correctly an i hurting the eggs when i do this? I am ready to candle the eggs to see if they are still living since the eggs on top are warm to touch sometimes but most of the time they are cool to the touch i have a still air incubator and all thermomiters read 100 degrees. I have a very nice man on here that is going to send me a fan for one of the incubators so for the next hatch i can cerculate the heat evenly over all eggs. I pray that thes eggs are still good and i have not ruined them not only is my daughter depending on me to hatch her some silkies but i have 7 other people who want some also

Kari, How many are in there?! I see some Icelandic eggs!! With that many eggs, maybe the old Farm Master does need to move to Iowa! Of course, then you'd just be filling it up!

Yep, those are your Icelandics! Off the top my head I think there is 136. The whole bottom layer is shipped eggs though, so we'll see.

Yes, CA has an inspection service: http://www.cahfs.ucdavis.edu/services/lab_locations.cfm

They do a free Necropsy for back yard flocks. They are primarily looking for Exotic New Castle Disease and other diseases like that. It does not look like they test eggs there. It looks like they may at the Veterinarian Medical School. The article about Portland Oregon said the lead test cost was $30.00.

I am still waiting for the Pacific Poultry folks to get back to me.

Thank you!

SNOW, AGAIN! Only about 4 inches but that is 4 inches too much! Power out for about 2-3 hours last night as well. At least the bator kicked right back on when power returned and the heat is almost back up to normal. Pics from this morning.

I NEED ducks for a customer he wants what he calls "Buffs" how do get those much less incubate them...how cute would that be?

I got some Buff Ducks from Metzer Farms! 5 drakes to one hen, still to young yet to breed. they are fun but they will use there size to push around others and potentially kill them I lost 3 Welsh Harlequin because the buffs throw their weight around. Don't get me wrong I love them they are the sweetest but they need to be hatched and kept separate from any other breed. TO bad he isn't looking for some older Boy Ducklings. :) I have plenty of those! they are very adorable when they hatch too.
I plan on hatching some of them myself when my one and only little gal starts laying.
