Hey! Candling question. If I have dark and thick shelled eggs is there anything you can do to candle them? I tried using my El Cheapo (I that's a brand name in China or maybe it's a itsgonnabreaksoon?) LED flashlight with 9 LEDs. It was not bright enough to see anything. What are you successful people using?

Also, I'ver read that some of you are doing a turkey hatch next. How hard it is to hatch turkeys? Are they any different than chickens? Where could I procure turkey eggs from? I've only ever raised on, a broad breasted bronze. I'd love to try a midget white or six!

One thing that I do to candle the darker shelled eggs is to candle from top and bottom at the same time. I put the egg I am going to candle on my "redneck" candler and then take a mag light and shine that in from the top. Works pretty good. You can also get a much higher lumens light to see into the darker shells.
Hatching turkeys is pretty similar to chickens only it takes an extra week to do it. I saw in a post some time ago that they take 80% humidity for lockdown and hatching. I hatched last year and didn't have it quite that high and all six hatched. As far as what breed, I prefer the heritage breeds. They take longer to get to eating size but the taste is fantastic and besides 12lbs was plenty for us at Thanksgiving and we had five for dinner and left overs.

Loooove the alpacas! Must be a showgirl lover thing, too.

Glad my eggs are doing well crazypetlady, and relieved you got a few NNs. Genetics are evil sometimes - I've hatched regular feathered chicks from NN to NN before and been utterly disappointed. I just need to get another turken roo without the bowtie and I'll be all set!

CrazyNeighborLady wandered over with her kids this afternoon, I just got done entertaining them. Her 3 (I think... honestly I have no idea, maybe 4?) year old son loves to play with my hose and water things. He could be part duck. If I had known how much he enjoyed it I would have employed him to clean and refill duck waterers long ago. He's coming over tomorrow to fill the 50 gallon duck pool after I dump and clean it. I think that's going to be the highlight of his day.

Which brings me to... he was only over here an hour and I'm exhausted. I am so not mother material. I like my kids to be able to be locked in their coop at night, diaper-free. And if they act out, they're delicious and CPS doesn't come to investigate.

It's taken the better part of the day to get caught up. I had a moment last night when I went to collect eggs. I walked in the coop with an 18 egg carton and walked out laughing hysterically. Broodies. Three of them to be exact. I got about 3 feet from the coop and face-palmed. Here we go again.

ETA: This happens to be very unusual. We've had two broodies at once before, but never three. One of them isn't quite a year old yet and she's serious as a heart attack.

I don't think I can do a hatch cam this time around- the eggs will be hatching at my son's preschool. I'm not sure if there's internet there. I'll tell you what, my hover chicken mother would be much, much happier if I could look in on them at any time. I'll ask the director if there is internet, and if so, if she'd let me set up a camera. I have a crippled old laptop (it works perfectly, but the case on it is cracked) that I could keep there. I'm going to the school today to water the eggs. I'll ask about it today. The teachers can tell me if there's internet or not, but only the director can give me permission to set up a camera.

I have decided I'm taking the eggs home for spring break- it's 9 days, and I just think it'd be better.
Oh yeah, I forgot, your eggs are at the school. Hope they say yes. And, I think that is a good idea to bring them home for spring break too.
