Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I need reassurance. Like a lot. I was candling yesterday to show a cousin and her little boy a developing hatching egg. And I showed them one. Then I went to grab another. And it was STUCK TO THE EGG TURNER!!!!!!!! My heart dropped. I didn't try to budge it for fear of breaking. I had it out just the other day. (I was looking to see if I could see into my darkest egg). Ahhhhhh what could this mean? What do I do? Someone please help.

I would put a couple of drops of water around the egg, wait a half hour and then try to slightly rotate the egg in the turner (pulling you'd be more likely to break it). If there is no give, repeat as many times as it takes to get it loose. Good luck.

I felt like such a jerk, but it worked.

I felt like I was doing evil scientist experiments on an unwilling test subject. Taping her legs together to try to straighten them. All she could do was lie on her stomach and cheep with her legs straight out behind her. I would stand her up and do chickie knee bends to try to straighten the legs. Each day when I changed out the taping, the leg would just pop back behind her and the joint stuck out funny. I wanted to explain if this didn't work, euthanasia was the only option. But other than not being able to stand, she was so lively and scooted everywhere, FAST!

Also, because the leg was behind her, that meant a couple of times per day I had to wash poop off her rear and her leg. This chick has really gotten a lot of attention.

Last night about midnight she starting chirping loudly from her box. I got up to check her and she immediately snuggled into my hand and got quiet. I might have to get one of the new bantam chicks to keep her company for a couple of days. She is really people oriented at this point.

She really migh make it now! she needs a name I'm sure she is staying her as a pet.

Thanks, you obviously understand. You can't just let them die. And it's not like I need to dote so much on one chick. I currently have about 75 with another 80 in the incubators. If I was an old farmer, maybe, but I'm too much of a soft touch and this chick REALLY wanted to make it.

I'm not going to vote because I entered. And I can't help it but I think mine is the best! LOL But I don't think its right to vote for myself or against myself.

Hillbilly hen- OMG...that husky is sooo beautiful. Is it yours? I want to get one. HOw is it with your chickens?

Cattitude- I heard about that as well. I'm always careful with my liquids. But this is the first time i've ever heard of food exploding and it happened to me! I think I might start reheating things in the oven.

There are soooo many cute babies. How can you possibly decide? Cute dogs, alpacas, chickens, ducks...oh my! The cutenss factor on here is through the roof!

It's odd people don't just click the forum tab. This tread is so active it is always showing up as last post in Hatching and Incubation threads, That or scroll down on forums tab to "New Posts", it's at top of list there too.

Any who, all is well with the incubator. Temp holding steady and managing the humidity quite well by just using a shot glass filled with water; keeps it 35-40%. Have a lot of confidence in this hatch as 2/3 of eggs are from our flock. So glad we purchased the full window Hova-bator for this, 4 kids here will enjoy not pushing each other to see what's going on. With 34 set there should be plenty to see.

I havent promised anyone any chicks yet. I am being greedy with my first ever hatch and plan on keep all hens just for me!

But I am sure I will just have to set some eggs not long afterr these hatch, right?

Yep, you will, it's in the handbook, Pages 1, 2 and 3 all clearly state "An empty incubator is cause for alarm!!!"

Too many years of doing for myself (with the ex) taught me that I don't need anyone to do anything for me. I know how to do plumbing, simple electrical, simple carpentry and any yard work that comes along.

I'm about to learn some plumbing. It's the one thing I've not tackled yet. DD's shower won't get hot, only luke warm. I think the mixing valve is wonky. I keep asking DH (who is usually wonderfully pro-active about anything that needs doing) and he is really reluctant to even look at this. I'm just going to YouTube it and then go see what I can do.

I had a number of great hatches in my 1588, then we moved to this house and I've had some issues with sticky chicks. I'm trying the dry method this time and see if I get better results.

And as for the deer story...deer attacks account for the most wildlife attacks on people. So when I was in the army at DLI in monterey, CA, while I was on CQ we had a urinalysis which no one knows when its coming. So I had to run across the base in the rain to wake the guys in their barracks at 4 am. I ran around a corner and ran smack dab into a young buck. We both were sooo startled and I froze. Then he lowered his head and charged, I ran sooooo **** fast and since I know how much faster deer are, I feel lucky that he was only half attempting to attack me. Everyone thought it was funny....but I didn't.

Thank you for that visual.

I have Marnans egg scheduled to hatch on the29th. I set 20 and 12 are definitely developing. 3 were clears and 5 are questionable. The last time i tried Marans eggs I got one of 4 to hatch. Three did develop. I hope to have a better hatch this time. My Marans is blue! These are Bev Davis FBCM Marans.

I will post here with their progress.

Yes please

This is our Bantam Cochin (we called her Aunt Jemimah) with her 3 little chicks. This pic fits in with "Finally Summer! Day June 20th, or maybe "Old Maids Day" June 4th :)

Eeek, your poor Aunt Jemimah has no legs

I love my little bantie cochin for just the same reason, she's all fluffy skirt and no legs

Our incubator broke. All were lost.

I am too upset to even think about it.

I think DH has been sucked into the chicken hobby. Last night he went out to lock everyone up and checked the nest boxes for last minute offerings from the girls. When he walked into the house I heard a big sigh. When I came to see what happened, there he was with a broken egg. He had dropped it on the kitchen floor when trying to pull eggs out of his pockets.

He looked at me and said "Tell me it's okay, I feel like I killed someone."

He's starting to view every egg as a chick.

Deb
Awwww, so sweet - But yay, hooked another one

Empty nest syndrome? ha! PLEASE, let me experience it!

SCG can it be a "funny" design? I have had an idea rolling around in my head since Mahonri said something on set day.

Oh I can't wait to see this

Seriously! I can't skip ANY thing, you all are just too much fun!

And with that I think I'm less than 80 pages behind, it's time to go let Mia out, it's above 10 degrees but super foggy this morning.

Now I am scared. My home made incubator is hicupping. The thermostat doesn't turn the light off all the way every time. Some times it just flickers it. When it does that the temp goes up because it is already supposed to turn off. If I go over and hit the side of the incubator it will turn off. But I am not awake all nite to do that. When I get up in the morning it is usually fine but sever time during the day it will do that. It has gone up to 101. something before I get to it to hit it. I don't know how high it has gone in the nite..........sigh..... I am getting a new incubator tomorrow that has the set temp and electronic read out. But I don't think I will put these eggs in it but start some new ones. I do see some veining in some but they are EE eggs and some are dark brown eggs so I can't see into them. Some of them have the air sack off to one side more than in the middle. Not too bad off. Anyway that is my up date on the eggs for now. I hate losing eggs.
