Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

There is one more day to vote for the most ingenious chicken design contest although it is not a close call at this point.

If you haven't voted yet, please do! There have been only 35 votes so far, and I know there are way more than 35 of you on here!

Congrats to everyone with moving chickies. Commiseration to those who have lost eggs.

Upping my humidity. I weighed the eggs last night and they have lost almost 1/2 the weight they should, in just 1 week.

Also had to toss a stinky. I knew right away something was wrong and found the culprit. A BC Marans. Darn.

...off to search the 'Net for the phone number of the closest veterinarian / pet hospital - at least I know where it is.
Linda, I go to Pleasant Valley Vet Clinic even though it's a 30+ minute drive for me. They are great and close to you, right by the Holiday Market. I've known Dr. Carlsen since she was a 12 year old kid in 4H. I couldn't speak more highly of any other clinic. They even keep Sunday morning hours.

Both excellent examples of "mare stare"

Staying up (or getting up every 1/2 hour) staring at the mare till you look kinda like this:
That's me at the incubator window. It has a permanent nose smug on the plexi-glass.

For those of you not fortunate enough to have gestating equines at your home, mares are notorious for being very secretive about foaling - a good adaptation for a wild horse, as they are completely helpless for a period of time during foaling, and don't want to give the predators a hint. It is, however, extremely frustrating for mare owners, as you have a very short amount of time to intervene if there is a problem with delivery. Mares can "hold it" until they are completely alone. Owners develop a look about them that "mare stare" describes completely.

I am currently waiting on two alpacas that were due last week. The bad thing with them is several weeks early and a month late are all within the realm of normal. Do something already girls!!!!

Kathy this is hysterically funny. YOu have a special nack . Have you concidered submitting to young childrens' magazines? Animal themes are always popular!!

Question> Is that a real fire pit?????

After some discussion, we have decided to have "working" emus. They are really astute students, very attentive........

They helped with raking.

And picking up twigs....

And ran with vigor and excitement to the next destination.....

They followed instructions, too. We told them to walk away now.... so we could start the fire...

All was going well, until Tyson (our dog) talked with them....

I don't know what he said...... but they walked off the job..........

Yes, saw it in a little movie theater!! About the time I started driving . . . seem to remember seeing Jaws about that time ,too.

I saw it at the drive-in when it was released. Are there even very many drive-ins still around? I know there's one in Sacramento. They used to have one up here, there was a goat that wandered around to keep the weeds down.

When I was teenager I worked in a theater. I remember someone calling me to ask the show times. I quoted the times for the afternoon matinee and then the evening shows. Then they asked me if it was a theater or a drive-in. I remember thinking they were a moron................exactly how would you have an afternoon matinee at a drive-in?
