Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Ok, I stayed away for a few days to mourn my "loss" after the incubator malfunction. Well the good news is despite being turned off for a day, there are still signs of life in the incubator. Got a text from my wife today saying one of my eggs had pipped. i had tried the cartons for the first time. This one pipped right at the edge of the carton. Because I had low expectations I didn't actually candle all the eggs. I am wondering if this is OK or if I should reach in through the vent hole and gently push this egg over onto it's side? Any thoughts?

you can see that the pip is just right at the level of the carton but low on the egg. Chick is trying to move toward zipping but is very low. Is it still OK? As long as I hear cheeping should I just leave it alone. I won't open the incubator but I could do a little of my own egg bowling through the vent. I'm inclined to leave it alone but maybe I need some encouragement. I am so thankful to finally see signs of life. Of course, I should have listened to everyone's advice and not gotten so bummed!!! :) The pip is a swedish flower hen.

Hahaha! I can picture that so well. Especially since I lived not too far from you when I was a kid in Morgan Hill. We lived at the base of Morgan Hill Mountain (back then we called it El Toro Mountain) on Three Oaks Farm. It's now a huge housing tract but 2 of the three oaks that gave the farm it's name are still there. Or were the last time I checked about 8 years ago.

Small world! It's still called El Toro by everyone I know. So sad to see all the farms become housing developments, but I suppose we all need a place to live.

Great News Jeff!

I would leave the egg alone. You can see the pip, so it is doing it's job.

I've been known to do a little pinball 'tilt" with the bator when needed.

Hi everyone i set 124 eggs and i have 73 ready for lockdown someone quoted on my previous post on the page before this one and was wondering how am i a day late for the ones that were set on saturday i thought today was day 18. I think i am going to lock them down later tonight to give the ones that were placed in ther two days late because of PO more time to still be turned as to why some that were set on sat looks like they are behind by a day or 2 not sure why guess it could have been my temp problems at the beginning but they are all alive and moving these are all silkies.

Wow, finally caught up! I can't believe all the early hatching going on!

I locked down around 5 p.m.

Some hard lessons learned today. I candled carefully and pulled the rest of my quitters last night. This afternoon, they went out to the compost, and 2 of the eggs had almost fully formed chicks with feathers. Now I will forever be wondering if maybe they were alive. I did stare at them for a long time while candling, and saw no movement, but what really surprises me is that I could NOT tell there was a chick in there at all. It looked like a blood ring. One was an Ameraucana, and one was a Basque. Ugh! I do hope they were actually dead when I pulled them. While I can't stand not knowing, it would have been worse if I opened them last night and they were not dead, so I guess a mystery is better.

Luckily, the other 17 I had pulled really were early quitters and clears.

On a positive note, I suddenly have hope the that the eggs I marked with a big X because I was sure they were empty might actually have a chance. I only pulled the worst-looking ones.

There are 30 eggs in lockdown (from the original 49).

I am so excited, despite today's not so pleasant trip to the compost.

My tiny tiny egg, a blue or black silkie. Its had a very active baby in there. So. IF it hatches out

will this baby be okay with the others?? Will they pick on it?? Do I need to move it with another smaller chick or what??? I got a couple of small eggs but this one looks the size of a quail egg almost. Ok maybe not AS small as a quail egg but yeah....lol
