And 2 from my incubator. But I didn't report them as part of the hatch along....

That thar be broody poo... for those of you without broody poo experience, it's not quite describable.

I want to know who or what ate the chick though?

I am guessing it was the broody mama. As a mother, I do know why animals eat their young.

Checked the eggs that did not hatch from lockdown. 11 eggs of 24 didn't hatch. 2 pipped and died, one that died maybe day 12 and the other 8 had full grown chicks with most yolk absorbed in it. My double egg had to 2 full grown chicks that had both absorbed their yolk. Something went wrong somewhere. Wasn't my best hatch, but I did get some cute little fuzzy butts out of it.

Lost a baby It had a crossed beak so I was planning to cull it anyway, but still.


Serama batch #1 is down to 4/6, clutch number two is going strong with 6/7 still developing

My hatch is finally over. I set 91, tossed 44 that were clear, 33 in the brooder and 2 still in the incubator. One of the two will probably not make it, bled a lot while hatching and the other one is fluffing up. 1 pipped and died and 11 didn't hatch. I am thinking I had such late hatchers because my incubator was accidently turned off for 8-10 hours and the temp went down to 78 degrees. I am happy with my results even with the 44 that were clear. These are mixes from my own flock and I wasn't sure on the fertility. At the time of collecting I had 22 hens with only 3 roosters, now I have only 12 hens and 2 roosters. Lost the rest to stray dogs last Thursday, a very heart wrenching experience.
I am looking forward to the next hatch-a-long. Now if this weather would cooperate I could get the lil ones outside in their outside brooder, but the way it looks it will be a couple of weeks before I can do that.

Wisher no offense, you weren't the only one to mention the poo. I wanted to do it immediately but thought I would be blackballed. I was kidding about not being rude because you guys were braver than me.. It's funny tho how it stood out so much, couldn't concentrate on the adorable chicks.

Hello! This was my first hatch. It was very exciting!! I set 27 eggs, 24 went into lockdown, 19 hatched. I had 10 local eggs and 17 shipped, all 10 of the local eggs hatched, 3 of the shipped eggs were infertile, and 9 hatched. I think 19 out of 24 is pretty good. I'm enjoying the chicks!

Breshcandra - Broody poo is totally nasty stuff. Love their hard work and dedication but holy cow - it smells like cow from 50 yards!

Last year when we had broodies it was great, they hatched and raised. No incubator or brooder box with heat lamps. Congrats on your new babies!

I guess I'll go with 21 chicks hatched, although I did set a day and a half late and there are more eggs in the 'bators.... but I'm not holding out hope for them. I'm not sad, either - every hatched chick is a miracle to me and I have 21 of 'em right now.

Off to fill in my data: 46 eggs set 21 hatched. ALL shipped eggs.
