Mail order chick arrived sick and splayed

The best way I've found to work through things like this is to remind everyone that there are a bunch of living animals that need our full attention, and to take extra good care of the chicks who made it. Death is sad and it's OK to cry - a little baby animal died. It seems the grief is expounded all the more when efforts were made to save the chick. That said - I would focus on the positives: How lucky the chick was to arrive at your house, and to have people to help it try to get better. And that living with those physical conditions was painful, and now the pain is over.

It's possible the splay leg was the result of something that happened in transit and the poor condition the physical result of the pain.

You are the parent.
Chickens are livestock, they are living things, living things die. It's a fact that is sometimes hard for people to swallow.
Tell her that she can have one good cry if it dies but no funeral ( that humanizes the chickens and will make the next death worse) and if she's still whimpering about it after a few days then you can't keep chickens anymore.
Kids understand and can cope a lot better than adults think, and you can soften the blow but there will still be an impact with the loss of any animal.
You have told them this, but experience is the best teacher
I completely agree with you and thank you for the much needed “bucking up” I respect my kids feeling but that was veering into sappy pretteen territory . No thank you! Let make the best of it and move on! our 11 remaining chicks are Quite the diversion! ID rather sit and watch them than watch tv 😋
