I know he didn't mean to do it, but dang it, its the third dog we have had that he has done this too. They want to chase him, totally our fault, but THREE almost looks suspicious. Oreo was our little boy's, so going to be a hard evening ahead of us, darn it. Just needed to tell someone. We live in the country, and everyone lets their dogs run lose, so its our responsibility, I know that, so don't remind me, I feel bad enough. I have already decided I am going to start buying a section of white vinyl Victorian fencing at a time and get that front all done next Spring. It is my goal now.

DH was out there when he hit him, and it was an accident, but I have this sneaking feeling in my heart that the MM was secretely snickering. He HATES our Lucy and the feeling is mutual, and he even told the neighbor they needed to shoot our dog. She told him that no one else had an issue with her, ONLY him. Lucy pinned him in the corner of our porch one day, and DH had to walk him back to his truck, so he evidently kicked her one or something, and this has trickled down to include the Fed Ex guy and the UPS fella, who has a limp. I have to laugh, he honks and drops the box in the drive and gets he heck our of our drive. b

I sure dread telling our 8 year old. He is upset if one of his pet mice passes, so his dog is going to be really hard!!! He was just 4 mos. old, still a goofy puppy.

You might want to take a look at buried dog fencing. You will be able to quickly fence any size area for much less than the vinyl fencing. I have almost two acres fenced with it and it has kept my JTR's on my property for 15 years. The most important aspect of any fencing is to take the time to boundary train your dogs as the instructions say. Even when the fence is off my dogs stop automatically 5' from the fence that you can't even see. For slightly more that $100 you can know that you have taken a very possitive step to insuring you don't lose another dog. Good luck and sorry about your loss.

I live in the Midwest too, roaming dogs are a problem.

I'm a dog lover and until our last one passed away we always had one and we never allowed them to run free without us present, but you definately have to realize that "you" are responsible for your dogs death and not the mailman. You need train them "not chase" at a minimum as they become a hazard to others when they do.

I also live in the country and I understand wanting to let the dogs run free, but it's dangerous for them and irresponsible for us to allow it. Would we let our children run around where the mailman could run them over? I certainly would hope not and the dog need to be treated and trained in the same way.

I am also a runner. I lost over 100 lbs. about a year ago and did that through walks and now running of 3 - 5 miles per day. There is nothing more irritating that running down the road and being chased by someones dog, that may or may not be friendly. I find myself wanting to carry a Taser to protect myself sometimes but I quickly remind myself that it's not the dogs fault, but that of his owner. We need to be responsible for our "children" no matter where we live so that they are not harmed and not a danger to others.

Dogs that chase cars or people are a traffic hazard and if someone got killed because they swerved to miss your dog, I'm quite certain you'd feel horrible the rest of your life about it. Just my two cents and I'll go back to quietly raising my chickens now

Sorry about your dog...

Like Opa I use underground for all six of my dogs. I'd highly recommend it! Regular fences can be buried under or jumped over. If you can, go with a professionally installed system. They cost a little more, but the training and support is worth the cost.

It also works great to keep the dogs away from the chickens.

can you "prove" this? I mean really prove it will the neighbor put this in writing cause right there it shows intent to harm the dog and yes 3 is suspicious
