maine chickenstock!! pictures of the event!!

Here is the question of the year. I was just offered a bag of Chick Starter from the Paris Farmers Union here in South Paris, but....I need to have a "letter head" for their tax purposes.
Now what do I do?

Both of my kids are coming with me - hubby's working.

I am wondering if someone here could come up with a sign/poster that talks of the benefits of quarantining the new poultry for 30 days. Something we could post to remind people of the dangers without terrifiying them. Anyone?? Maybe someone else already has one?

frozen feathers had made up a flyer that we gave out at the last chickenstock that you can print up , it had that right on it.
here it is

High resolution version. Better if you have DSL or cable to view this one, unless you are a patient dial-up user.

Low resolution version. Not as clean looking, but works and kinder to dial-uppers.

I will gladly do a poster with quarentine and safety issues with any new pets. It is important and when someone doesn't choose to go this route, then it is their personal choice. None of us have any problems, but its easy to loose track of who's who came from where when your dealing with new flock members. (atleast it is for me!)

We should all be concerned with the transportation of virus' and disease. In the "old days" farmers used strict precautions and this is where the veternarians and AFB's would have to wear boot and clothing covers, disinfect rinse and throw items away prior to leaving the building to prevent cross contamination. Often here in my own grandparents farm, the barn doors were locked when they were not in them. Visitors were prohibited from walking into a farm due to the disease that is carried from one neighbor to another. People did not bring their animals to the fairs etc for fear of becoming contaminated.
Germs are easily spred from hand/shoe to hand/shoe contact. Travel and so many other issues such as stress can weaken even the strongest of birds causing death (for example), it is up to us individually as flock/animal owners to quarentine our own critters. You should not trust everyone when it comes to the health of you back yard flock.
I AM NOT SAYING THIS TO ANY ONE PERSON, generalizing our personal responsibilities. I have one time brought a stray cat into my home, feeling sorry for it, taking it to the vets should have been my #1 priority, period.
Instead after the weekend (being in and around us humans and our other cats) come to find out that it had different worms, fleas, God only knows when her last rabies and distemper shots, if she had any.
After we booster shot our other kitties, treating the new one like a diseased animal, we gained a control, but I have forwarned many people DO NOT TAKE IT IN! Take it into a separate storage area until its safe to take it to a shelter or Vets office. That cat COULD HAVE had feline HIV, Lukemia and many other serious conditions my nieve mind cannot comprehend.
The best way to insure quarentine- is for you to do the quarentine yourself, period.

BTW!!! We have a bag of Chick Starter from the Paris Farmers Union, S.Paris, ME. Woohooo, this made me feel so good about going out on the limb and asking!
We will make sure they recieve notice.
Also, I hope people like cook books!!! I have been given a collection of cook books, I'll be selling them at $1 a peice and give the money back to the lady that gave them to me. She wanted to get rid of them and I thought that it would be nice if I could get something for her.
Also some hunting books, older ones. Not a clue about them, but some of the cook books look really cool!
Anyways, hope all are having a good week, going to fast as it is!

hi guys! We'll be there. i wondered if anyone was interested in black stars (about 4 weeks old)? my cousin ordered 12 extra from mcmurray hatchery for me but I'm so enjoying incubating/hatching my own that I don't plan on taking them from him. he said he would keep them, but I could always take them and bring some/all to chickenstock if anyone is interested.

I was thinking it might be fun to have a separate thread where we posted what we were planning on bringing for trade/sale so that we could think about what we might want to get while we're there. Anyone think thats a good idea? let me know if anyone's interested in the black stars!
