New to BYC, not completely new to fowl. I like birds in general. My family just moved onto a 200 year old farm site in Maine. We are hoping to raise Magpie Ducks (is that a naughty word in here) and chickens: Silver Laced Dottes, Ameraucanas and Light Brahmas ordered and coming soon. I currently have some Golden Comet pullets (4) to get started in eggs as they were inexpensive and we couldn't wait for the chicks to arrive to get this farm going. We have a year old Lavender Araucauna roo coming this week. I'm sortof experienced with poultry but my partner has NO experience. He is excited to breed the Lavenders. I guess I am too but I am a bit more nervous than he is as I know how much work this could be. Already I have had no luck finding hens for this pretty roo. *I* am interested in heritage breeds and hope to be a part of keeping at least one or two heritage breeds here long term. Our current order will let us try out a few breeds. I admit that my favorite chicken was an Araucauna hen almost 20 years ago so the idea of breeding lavender Americaunas is intriguing. She followed me everywhere! Even rode on my shoulder. Lots of insecurities about doing any of this well. We have coops ready and runs and 9 acres for free ranging so here's hoping that something works out with a lot of support from some BYC members :)

I'm still trying to figure out the lavender color thing... and have been working to help establish my own flock of three different heritage breeds.
