Maine

Just got back from Longhorn after picking up a round bale and some dog food. I had to wait for the bale since they were trying to get all the grain that had just been delivered under cover before the skies opened up. No big deal for me to wait. I understood why I wasnt the priority. Too bad other customers might not have been so understanding. Fortunately I was the only one there.

Anyway the point of this post is they just got in 3 truckloads of grain. I got to talking about freshness and said that with the amount of grain they get per week it was probably about as fresh as it could be especially for the best selling grains. Found out they sell about a pallet of layer pellets a day. Depending on the size of the pallet that would be 40-50 bags or 2000-2500 pounds a day.

I did manage to get home and get the round bale out of the bed of the truck for the horses before the rain really started to come down. Thank goodness considering what it is like outside right now.

We've got 3 chicks total :) One is 12 days, the other 11, and the last is 5 days. I have a funny feeling the black one might be a boy- welsummer x marans- if anyone is interested, let me know!

How is it that you have such an age span in these chicks? Did Momma hatch all 3 of them? I hope that in the future, I will be blessed with a broody and some babies.

I'm looking for a SLW Hen. If they would happen to have a Blue, Lavender or black Silkie hen also! Then that would be heaven! ! I'm 10 miles approx. From Bethel Maine so the closer the better. Please post me you info along with some pictures! Thanks

So sweet! What kind is the first little chick?
The first 2 (brownish ones) are both Welsummer X Chantecler. The black one is a Welsummer x Marans- I thought it was from the splash marans ( the broody) but it could have been from my cuckoo marans.

The mom did hatch all 3- The first 2 were about 24 hours apart, the last one a week- she continued to set on eggs- I was about a day away from tossing them myself, and I got home from a visit with Ash to find a new baby in there! She kicked out the last 2 eggs shortly after.

I was hoping for a broody earlier this year- like spring or early summer- I suppose this works though!

Kelly: So sweet that she had to have known that there was still one to go. What a good momma you have. If she goes broody next summer, you could plan a bigger hatch, especially if she proves as good at raising them as she does hatching them. I just love seeing a broody with chicks. I had some broods when I was a kid. As I recall, one hatched out quite a flock of little mutts. (I had bantams, leghorns, RIR, and a broiler that was recovered from one of the poultry trucks passing by. The rooster was a bantam.)
