Maine

Who here is the resident authority on silkies? I need a crash course, then advise as to which are the best plausible options for Maine. I have a coop, you can check the photos via my avatar's "my coop" (obv?) but basically my birds will not have a heated environment. The barn will offer plenty of protection from the cold and any predators. That being said, let's talk about adding a pair of silkies to my flock. Once my chicks actually move to the barn, that is.

Go!

Whilst trying to photo the exotic, the others were far too interested in gettin in my face.

Thanks, Izzy! I'm really lucky. All 17 showed up alive and well, and have been doing great ever since. They are a week and a half old, and growing like weeds. Hope to keep sharing good content of them as they feather out. We'll see how the journey goes.

Cheers

No time to catch up, but heres a photo and video update of the little ones! Trying to get the "rare exotic" out here for a photo shoot.

Huddling on top of the brooder. I've since put cardboard on top to make cleaning easier.

Decided it was time for a bath evidently

Okay so this chick has attitude--- look at that FACE and then it looks like the same one who 'got in your face.' Funny.
Silkies folks would be Hoppy and CloverRun.
A goose got a name today, officially anyway.

Will a hawk actually take a full grown chicken, or do they mostly target youngsters? It makes me nervous when they circle, but if I kept the girls in for fear of hawks, they'd never get outside. I got the electric fence turned around so it encloses the entire garden today. Plenty of good scratching to be had there! Is it too late to plant annual rye grass? I know that winter rye would take hold, Any one with experience with annual rye grass?

I'm in Western Mass but just got a message from a friend of mine near Kennebunk. They discover a chicken on their porch this evening. They are trying to make him or her safe and comfortable for the night while they try to find where it came from. They are not chicken folks but are worried about it. I've given them a little guidance but... If it makes it through the night without getting killed by a predator and is still around in the am.... Does anyone have any idea where they could bring it that might take it? I've asked them to send me a picture in the morning
