I think you should have tried the squirrel.

Use this pie crust recipe:

4 cups flour
1.75 cups shortening
3 tbsp white sugar
2 tsp kosher salt
1 egg (prefer duck)
1/2 cup cold water

Add all ingredients except egg and water together. Blend until crumbly. I use my food processor. Add egg and water together in small bowl, scramble. Add to other ingredients and mix together. This makes 2 full (top and bottom) pie crusts. I usually use one and freeze one. Super easy. It needs to be really cold to roll out right. If not the right temp I throw it in the freezer for about 30 minutes before rolling.

Well the above is helpful, thank you, BYC.

I like my pie crust because it's easy (throw it all in the food processor) and really, really soft and flaky.

Try it, just once. :)

And keep your rolling pin handy, in case any of those varmints aren't really dead when left as a present.

Thank you all soo much! So I think after your advice I will find a small dog/cat crate and make her a little nest and then move that into the coop safe and sound. She is an OEGB so she needs little space. Last few questions, I use shavings for the coop... is that ok for nest as well? Also, is it ok to keep her shut in as long as she has food and water and just ler her out once a day or do you think it will get yucky in there? We have 9 other birds and I don't want them bothering her. Thanks again everyone!
Definitely check out the Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch Thread. They are great people!! No question is stupid!! I was a nervous wreck w/my first broody--a little Silkie. It was February! I was so worried that the chicks would be cold, that the other birds would hurt the babies, etc. It was like waiting for your own babies to be born! The BYC'ers on the Broody thread were wonderful at calming my fears and supporting me every step of the way.

I can't thank them enough!!

Shavings are fine for her nest. I would let her come & go as she pleases unless you find the other birds are getting in there to lay or damage eggs. I've read that most broodies won't sully the nest but some do. I would only lock her in for a day or 2 after Hatch Day just to keep the chicks safe from others in the flock.

I think you should have tried the squirrel. Use this pie crust recipe:

LOL! SCG, When I first read this I thought you were giving her a recipe for squirrel pie.

Interesting recipe- I have never made pie crust with egg. My recipe, for a 2 crust pie, has a whole cup of butter, plus a quarter cup of shortening... I may try this next time!

I saw a post on craigslist listing free woodchips and shavings...many bags of them, needed to be picked up on a regular basis. I think the location was Portland.

Next- I know this is a long shot, but does anyone think they might like to add a rooster to their flock?? Of the 3 chicks my broody hatched, I am 99% sure one is a boy- he's about 5 weeks old now. Welsummer x Marans.

I suppose I'll attach a photo- he is the black one.

Ok, one more- I thought this was sort of funny- here he is running across the lawn :)

I don't think there is any thing more funny than watching a chicken run across the lawn... or a bunch of chickens running across the lawn, or a bunch of chickens running across the lawn chasing the lead bird who has a tasty morsel.

More funny- watching a bunch of chickens run across the lawn, chasing after my husband...or the dog when I throw him a bone...silly chickens!

I really wish I could. If I were to have a roo, that is one I'd want.
