Maine

Speaking of "funny," I found a partly dried out, dead night crawler on the floor of our garage, this morning, and I took it down to my girls. One of my Buffs snatched it from me and took off running with all four others in hot pursuit. It was so funny!! She couldn't stop to eat it! THAT was some good chicken TV!

Throwing this out there: I have a broody that will not be deterred. I am thinking "what the heck I'll let her hatch something". I don't really want to house chicks all winter, so I guess my question is does anyone in the area want some chicks in a month or so? I'll probably hatch white leghorn. I'll do super cheap since this isn't an ideal time of year.

More funny- watching a bunch of chickens run across the lawn, chasing after my husband...or the dog when I throw him a bone...silly chickens!
He's awful cute! If I didn't live in town, I'd take him. Although, neighbors on both sides have asked what I did w/my roo because they haven't heard him. They were disappointed to learn I re-homed him--loved to hear him they said! I told them DH didn't love hearing him so he had to go.

I love watching them run! I have 1 that will chase after the ball I've thrown for the dogs. My littlest dog glares at her like "No way Jose, that's MY ball!"

I've had broodies hatch in the coop in the middle of winter. They take care of the chicks in the coop. Just so you're aware you don't have to get rid of them.

Its mostly a space issue. She's in the little coop since the big coop won't be ready until spring. The 8 hens have 3 square feet of indoor space and I don't want to confine them anymore.

I don't know who saw that listing in CL but if you find again please send me the link. The only one I found was for Hallowell.

My son did better at the show than I did. It was nice to see so many birds and people.

I was wondering how people, or should I say their birds, did. Would have loved to have gone but either I need to move closer or the show has to move closer to me.

Today, I got a good start on next year's garden. I planted potatoes, Egyptian onions, and garlic in a 4' wide bed, then covered all with grass clippings, leaves hay and garden debris. Hopefully, the heavier garden debris on top of the lighter stuff will deter the girls from digging down to the soil in that area. I've also planted my winter greens (some seeds, and some transplants. I have about 3 dozen more transplants to set) in 2 hay bale cold frames... about 3' x 7.5' each. I made wood frame fronts for the south side of the cold frames, covered with wire. That way, on a warm day, they can be open for ventilation, the girls can see, but not touch. These beds will be covered with plastic. I should be able to harvest starting at the end of the month, and through November, then can start harvesting again in early March. The girls are doing an awesome job with garden clean up. One of the girls chased one of my cats today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally, the tables have turned!!!!!!!!!!
