Maine

Suzeme - last year I tried Deciccio (sp?) from Johnnys - not much luck with that at all. It was my first year with a garden in maine. This year we are trying Diplomat.

I too will be looking locally for my turkeys...Id like Midget whites! I may order through paris farmers union if I cant get them from a breeder. Widget - does Longhorn order turkeys? do you think I could just order 3 or 4?

Longhorn does sell poults but not Midget Whites. Not sure if they can order them or not. They do have Blue Slate, Black Spanish, Bourbon Red and Royal Palm for their heritage breed offerings this year. And yes you can just get three or four. I can ask this weekend about Midget Whites since I have to go there for hay and goat feed.

would you do me a huge favor and ask them about their pullet price? The order form is confusing. It looks like roos, pullets and sr are the same price which doesn't seem right. I've been meaning to call (I don't live nearby), but I keep forgetting.

If I remember to I certainly will. Someone asked me how old I was the other day and I really had to stop and think about it.

Okay so here is the scoop. The price posted is the price regardless of whether or not you want pullet, roo or straight run. Most people just want pullets so the price reflects that. So fair if you want pullets. A bit unfair if you want a roo. But not by much.

As far as Midget Whites go it would be a special order so price wise it would not make sense. They do not know anyone local who has any. But if anyone is interested I know Ideal does offer them (minimum 10 at $10 ea.). Stromburgs also has them. Sand Hill does offer them but they lost over 65% of their turkey breeding flock last year due to a Buffalo gnat invasion. If anyone is interested in ordering some poults I would love to get three or four. I just can not have them sent to my PO since I am not home during normal PO hours to pick them up.

you're a rock star widget! Thank you!

Good news. The girls have decided to start laying again.

Bad news. All four eggs were frozen and cracked.

. But at least I know where they lay now and to be on the look out.

The birds were very vocal and energetic this morning while the farrier was here to trim the horses hooves. All of a sudden it became very quiet. The poultry was very still and huddled by the porch. I looked up and there was a bald eagle circling. We watched it for about five minutes while it just lazily circled. Hardly a wing flap so there was just enough of a breeze. Off in the distance there was another eagle. Predator or not it was a beautiful sight to see.

I also saw a skunk crossing the road on my way to the airport this morning. The heck with the woodchuck. A skunk on the move is a sure sign of Spring.

I do believe we're going to have an early spring. It won't be long before folks are tapping the maples. My egg hugger gal gave me an egg of her own this morning. She lays the prettiest blue eggs. I also think she's my prettiest pullet. So, now we're at 3/5. The gals had chicken soup for breakfast. SHHH... don't tell them!

Last night, when I went to clean up after supper... there was NO water pressure. So now we're lugging water until Monday when a guy will come to replace the well pump.

Widget, I will go in on an order of midgets with you when the time is right. I blew my farm/garden budget this month so perhaps next month?
