Maine

Congrats everyone on the chicks and seeds! Our seeds came up just days aftet planting in trays in the house and are in need of the outdoors already too. I stopped at a certain store to get feed and saw chicks dying in the bin. Quick! All soft hearts run for a worker! And....then talk them into letting you take them home for free to try to save them...and then drop Sav-a-chic in them like there's no tomorrow...and then recall that you caught a glance at what they were labeled as- Americaunas. I only promised not to BUY chicks, no one said anything about rescuing free chicks! Sadly it doesn't look good for one, maybe two. Got a couple of fighters and the light hasn't gone out of their eyes yet:)

Good luck with the chicks!

Day 20 on Rock Stars and French Black Copper Marans!! I see some rocking (very slight movement) on a couple eggs- Has anyone else noticed this before?

Very exciting!! We will want pictures! One of my Sizzles hatched 4 eggs in the coop last February. My daughter was keeping me posted while I was at work. When she called to say she could hear peeping from under Janice, I told my boss, "Gotta go, we've got a baby chick!" He's such a good guy. He said, "Get outta here!"

Thanks everyone, trying not to count my chickens before they hatch... I'll try to get pictures if my kids' big heads will stay out of the way of the windows :)

It is so hard not to count! I wish you well and hope you get a bunch:) One of the rescue chicks passed on last night. I really don't know with these guys. Was thinking vitamin/mineral deficiency as well as 'box store' care. I read something somewhere on what they are doing- one went in three circles before stopping against the wall but was alright afterwards??? Last night 2 would get to the waterer on their own, the third would drink on its own if placed at the waterer. This morning they are peeping but laying around, one with a wing shiver every now and then. I hope they make it but know it is pretty much a hospice situation if they don't start to eat soon. Smiles to everyone and here's pushing sunshine your way;-)

If you can get some Nutridrench into them, that will be your best option of saving them. Be sure you practice good bio-security between them and your flock. The circling chick is showing signs of Vitamin E encephalopathy... crazy chick disease.

I was at a local store... that I won't name... last week, and they had a bunch of slate grey ducks that were in deplorable conditions. Their bedding was sopping wet and black with poo. I know ducks are messy, but that seems like a disaster in the making, prime breeding grounds for coccidiosis.

These conditions under which poultry is distributed are plenty of reason to encourage back yard flock management to produce birds locally.

You have any Dominique roos you want to get rid of? I am looking to start a flock of these later in the season...
We are awaiting there arrival this week. Its been a "waiting forever" game but we have been told they are shipping today! If we end up with more than the one roo we ordered we will let you know for sure!!
