Maine

While at the town dump yesterday, I picked up a beautiful steel door, with full length thermopane window, and 4 beautiful thermopane windows. And, the screens to go with them! I love to go shopping there, and the price is always right. My new coop is going to be styling!! Also got a phone call from a local guy who might be able to cut my trees. He's coming over tomorrow to take a look. Praying that he'll do the job and it won't cost me an arm and a leg. My chickies need more room.

Well waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to fall back asleep a couple nights ago paid off. I got to thinking about what I could use for a temporary yet secure chicken/duck pen and I came up with an idea that should work. So today I took apart the dog pen that had doubled as a chicken pen for the past few years. I stopped using it last winter when the snow was higher than the top of the pen. My biggest issue with it was that the top was open due to its size. And the hoop coop that it was attached to was just too low to the ground. So today I made an 8x16 ft pen. I took three extra panels and put them over the top making a, hopefully, secure roof. I covered part of it with a tarp to provide shade and block rain. Plus there is a giant plastic dog kennel in there for extra shelter. Only major drawback is that the pen is only 4 ft high. But I was finally able to put the youngsters that had been in the basement brooder outside which was the goal. And other than my time the whole thing did not cost me a penny.

I also thought of how to build a more permanent coop with human sized height while I was not sleeping. That one will cost a bit but the coop is already 3/4 built. I just need to attach a pen and add a bit of plywood to make the coop more weather proof.

I love figuring out stuff & building it. I've done some amazing architecture when I couldn't sleep. (Haven't built all of it, yet.) I have a mild graph paper addiction, too.

For the automatic pop doors I've read that they go off light and not at specific times... and some people have complained that they lock their chickens out. I have quite a few "night owls" that I have to give a personal invitation to bed most nights... I'd be worried that an auto pop door would lock them out.

That being said, things may have changed in the last few years since I've looked. I certainly think they're in theory a great idea, and I would love to sleep in some mornings or go to bed early... or even not have to pay someone to come out if I won't be home.

Post what ya find out!

My understanding is that the radio antenna motor is fed through a timer. So, I'd set the timer for the door to close about the time it gets quite dark, and for it to open after day light. I'd have to make adjustments to match changing day lengths, and I'd have to do nightly inspections for a while to be sure the flock was getting in before the door closed. Investment would be minimal, so if it didn't satisfy my needs, I wouldn't be out a lot of money.

Striperon: Don't blame you about preference for being on the boat! My thought is that with a electrified pop door, it would give me the freedom to be away from home over night... perhaps on that coveted kayak camping trip... without worrying about Rocky helping himself to chicken dinner.

Just to bring everyone up to speed with the Cossack happenings here. We're waiting to hear from the US Consulate to set up my bride's interview and Med exam in pursuit of her Immy visa. With a bit of luck we'll be in Bangor (Levant) in Sep or Oct.

When we arrive I'll be working with a buddy in Machias to set up a homestead and permanent abode. The plan so far is to get a flock of dual-purp, cold hardy, fair layin, broodies to propagate em the way God designed it and to feed em grain free and GMO free from the garden and any kitchen cast offs I can drum up in the area. Think Back to Eden style all the way. I want to try to copy Paul Gautschi's method as closely as possible including using my flock as a dirt factory that poops eggs.

Until I do arrive and get chicken poop on my boots, I'll be hangin out and soakin up the knowledge from all of you.

Welcome Tim & Kayta! Best Wishes for Safe Travels!

Now, about that door opener: Can you wire a lamp??? Or do you know any one who can? If you have the most basic of electrical and building skills, you can build your own electric door opener for the price of a used electric car radio antenna. That's what I'll be doing for the pop door on my new coop. And, I agree, it's hard to put a price on the peace of mind that comes with knowing that your girls will be safely shut in without you having to go trudging out every evening. I can't wait to get to that bit of independence with my flock.
Wire a lamp, you say? Hmmm... DH has wired every building we own!! He'll be SO excited when he hears about this!!

NICE HAUL, LG!!! I'm still looking for more room for my girls. I might even be getting the portable paddock wanted, if DS makes good on my birthday gift.

AH MAAAAN!

I just read earlier that Helen's in Machias burned down in the wee hours this morning.  I was SO looking forward to taking my wife for a lobster and blueberry pie when we got home this Fall.

NUTS!!
Tnic, welcome! Don't worry about Helens. I heard the owner say he hopes to rebuild & be up & running by next summer. It'll just be a little wait for you. Maybe the one in Ellsworth could "tie" you over?
